IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR
STUDENTS AND PARENTS
The LSS Science Department Policy Statements summarize expectations for students regarding behaviour, supplies, attendance, and safety.  In addition they include detailed instructions for notebook organization as well as accepted formatting for laboratory  reports, graphs, diagrams, and scientific data tables.  Click to download the pdf file.
NOTICES

I am not teaching Science 10
in 2006/07 or 2007/08

However I am available for help if
your regular teacher is not.

One  quiz rewrite permitted per term
One test rewrite permitted per semester
Science 10 at LSS is taught by highly experienced and qualified science teachers.  It involves furthur investigations into the fields of Biology (Cytology and Genetics), Physics (Electricity , Magnetism, and Radioactivity), Earth Science (Geological Time Scale and Plate Tectonics), and Chemistry (Ion Theory, Inorganic Compounds, and Chemical Reactions).   Students are provided with opportuunities to develop positive attitudes toward science and to develop the skills and processes of science.  Click here to download the pdf file of the Science 10 Course Outline including the Ministry of Education Prescribed Learning Outcomes as well as the Course Content. of the Science 10 course.  All students are required to achieve 100% on a lab safety exam before being permitted to participate in laboratory experiences.
Science 10 is a provincially examinable subject.  A scheduled Provincial Examination counting for 20% of the student's final mark will be written at the conclusion of the course.  Click here to download pdf files of previously released Science 10 Provincial Examinations and Answer Keys from the official examinations page of the Ministry of Education website.

MEIOSIS ASSIGNMENT:

The idea of this project is to give you a head start at understanding next week's classes.
Basically you are to make your own notes in a manner similar to those given out to you for mitosis.
You may use any number of chromosomes you like but keep that number small.

The following links are provided for you as references:

www.sumanasinc.com/webcontent/anisamples/majorsbiology/meiosis.html
www.accessexcellence.org/RC/VL/GG/meiosis.html

Beware that on the first reference website they call "centrioles" - "centrosomes"
To keep it simple it will be sufficient to show only one "crossing over" event

Hand in a "basic complete job" Tuesday November 15/05 but receive no bonus marks.
To receive bonus marks must be handed in, in class Monday morning November 14/05
and be "thoughtfully and correctly" done ie. large diagrams, neat, colour, no errors, etc. !

MITOSIS FLIP CARD PROJECT:

Must show minimum of 5 stages (IPMAT); adding extra "in betweens" will improve animation
Use light cardboard, index cards, or two layers of glued together paper for each page
If you sit in the:
1st/3rd/5th seats  show 5 chromosomes
2nd/4th/6th seats show 6 chromosomes
Draw chromosomes LARGE! COLOUR!
Keep the drawings toward the OUTSIDE EDGE of each card/page
A possible strategy is to draw the diagrams using a computer and glue them on later.
Make sure the front card/page is cut the shortest and that each succeeding page is slightly longer
The very front page is a title page and the back page is a index (list of stages and their card number)

Hand in Wednesday November 16/05
Much wiser to have it done by Monday because doing this project is studying for the Mitosis Quiz
