ABOUT THE GURUKUL

Shri Madh Dayanand Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Shikha Puram is a prestigious institution, which has an unparallel standard, name and fame not only in India but in other countries as well. The Gurukul was established in the year of 1988 with a view of providing girls the opportunity of better eduction.

The gurukul, is run by Dr. Sumedha and Dr. Sukama who not only shared the same gurukul, but also shared a common vision- a vision to impart quality education in the traditional gurukul style. It was March 6th, 1988 that their dream acquired a definite shape when the foundation of Shri Madh Dayanand Kanya Gurukul Mahavidyalaya was laid at Chotipura (Shikhapuram) village, Moradabad. Dr Sumedha's father Shri Hargovind Singh gave momentum to the project by donating 10 acres of land. Thereafter, there was no looking back. Today, the gurukul has students spanning from 12 states of India.

The gurukul initially started in one classroom with a couple of students. Today it takes pride in educating more than 500 girls in a school sprawled over 50 acres of land, including 50 class rooms, 2 hostels, Science laboratory, Computer laboratory, library, playgrounds, and Yagyashala etc.

Teaching is imparted in such a way that the students remain attached to our rich culture and heritage. The students are expected to follow a rigorous regime that includes exercise, study and games. The starts at 4:00 A.M. Everything starts and ends with mantras. The gurukul stresses on meditation and yoga. The air is therefore replete with shlokas.

At the same time, the gurukul is abreast with the latest technology and information. It has a fully functioning computer lab for the same.

The gurukul also imparts training in archery. In fact, two gold medallists in the last Asian Games were from the gurukul.

The gurukul charges a minimal fee of Rs. 500 per month inclusive of all other facilities. However , those who cannot afford it are also received with open arms.

The gurukul system of education demands a complete separation from one's family. So the only condition is that a student has to reside in the Gurukul. There is no facilities for admitting day scholars. The Gurukul prefers teacher who can reside in the premises.

The institution functions on the donations it receives from various sections of the society. People from all walks of life continue to donate and most of them prefer to remain anonymous.

"The gurukul is the only institution of its kind in the entire state. Amidst the forest, its location creates an ambience and conductive surrounding for learning..." - Times of india (August 30, 2003/Saturday;Volume 3, Issue No.2;Western UP plus)
