A big thanks to Marshal CHURCHILL for these pictures.
The Patrol.
Here are just some notes, Analysing our team's performance in the May 2003 Event.
I had gone into this game, knowing that my team would be mainly New guys and that many would not know the site at all. Indeed, only a small percentage of us, would have played a HARDCORE (Freeform or 24hour) Game before. While 4 of our guys, had never even played a game before!

I saw this as a major weakness, when up against a team that had far more experiance and only with 1 Newbie. The second difference in teams was the plan for the majority of our guys to camp in the Safe Zone, while Team 2 intended to stay in the field. This would give them extra points, although our HANDICAP could hopefully wipe this out.

Our FLAG
TMA have him in their sights!
With a BAD weather forecast for both days, it was expected to RAIN; I planned primarily to play DEFENCE on the first day (which would allow us to shelter). Indeed DAY 1, would use FREEFORM rules and therefore it was not necessary to be mobile or aggressive. I planned to play more of an aggressive strategy on DAY 2. Mainly as on Day 2, we would need to complete as many TASKS as possible, and may still be behind by that stage. We would never leave the FLAG undefended, apart from overnight. While my strategy, did not involve capturing our opponents FLAG either. Instead, I hoped to win on TAGS and TASKS. Other than that, I had no FIXED plan and realised that I would have to think on my feet to suit the situation. Meeting the guys on the morning of DAY 1, I hoped we would pull together as a team.
DAY 1:

Well we could have done better, but doubt we would have spotted O.D. tailing us at distance. Knowing the ground ahead was clear at that time, we managed to cover the ground fairly fast, even though some of us had our kit. However, it took a while to get camp set up and even so we did have areas that were not covered. Everyone did their bit and I my confidence in the 69th grew.

We managed an OK defence in the initial probe by Team 2. Indeed, it turned out to be the largest attack by the opponents over the entire event. With 7 tags being scored to our loss of 3. Again everyone held their ground and fire, as directed. Indeed we played as a team. Then after I had spotted the sniper, our counter attack was aggressive and rapid. Once the sniper was located, pinned him down and cornered him. Just how a sniper should be countered. By this stage, I was happy with everyone's performance.

However, I feared a second attack and decided to change my PLAN and move off to a second position. The Patrol to SCAREY CORNER was not as good as it could have been (just using a simple LINEAR formation) as I just wanted to see how the New guys patrolled. I had stated 10m spacing, but as the pictures show, they did tend to group up at times. If we had been ambushed, then it would be likely that we would lose multiple TAGS.  I made of a note of it.

I put everyone into defence positions immediatly, once at Scarey Corner. This was to show them that I expected them to be switched on straight away. If I had more experiance of working with them, I would have sent out a picket team.
However when our position was probed (on both days) I found the sentries had switched off and therefore got bumped. They should make note of that and learn that HARDCORE games do have slow patches (some are longer than others) but letting your guard down is not something you can afford to do.

Our defence held however and I am not criticising the team, they did everything I instructed them. Once I organised everyone, to have an oppertunity to go out on a patrol; I was happier, as I didn't want the new guys to have a dull time.

Leading the second patrol, I kept things very simple and didn't try to confuse them. All I briefed them, was to have good 10m spacing and how to use the RV handsignal and what it meant. Moving off, I informed Nilz that I wanted him to only follow 20m behind me, as I do work as a forward scout to minimise risks. I found the new guys impressed me with only making minimal noise on the patrol. The all round defence we set up was also well executed and payed off. Lastly the stalking of UE proved good and we remained unseen, until it was too late. Again, we had all ket together and this made our fast withdrawl easy to arrange.

The impromtu ambush on the Tag Zone proved OK for me, although my team mates had not spread out enough in the limited set up time. I realised this and hence why I called another withdrawl after the initial firing. We got back after abit of confusion and were ready for a counter attack. The patrol had ended a success and I was pleased that we had sustained no losses.
