Things Everyone should know:

Written by Andrew Coleman.

1) Freedom and Peace are opposites. Attempts to increase one inevitably result in a decrease of the other. Parents know this instinctively, but fail to apply it outside of their children.

2) Evil increases the stakes in the Freedom vs. Peace dichotomy. In a purely good world the dichotomy still would exist, but it would be mostly irrelevant.

3a) Pain/undesirable outcomes are fundamentally different from Pleasure/desirable outcomes. They are NOT "other end of the same spectrum" but are totally different things. Therefore the only way to justify a Painful "means" requires an "end" of avoiding other "Pain". (The only way to justify Murder is an attempt to stop other murders) Similarly, the only reasonable means to obtain a Pleasurable "end" is a "Means" paid for with lost pleasure. (Taxing farmers excess food to pay for your President's Limo is OK, but taking their seed stock is never right)

3b) "Good people" realizes #3a is true and avoid Pain even at the cost of giving up Pleasure. "Evil People" do not understand #3a and are willing to accept any amount of Pain if they get sufficient pleasure. Example: a good man will not kill the woman he loves no matter what you offer them. An evil man will have SOME price (no matter how astronomical) for which he is willing to kill his beloved wife.

3c) Good vs. Evil describes actions entirely based on your motive. If you kill someone because you wanted his shoes, that act is still evil even if he turned out to be a mass murder. If you kill someone that you thought was trying to kill you, that act is not evil, even if they turned out to be innocent.

4a) Violence never solved anything except Over-Population.

4b) Over-Population is the underlying cause of 90% of mankind's problems (housing, education, elderly healthcare, unemployment, famine, pollution to name but a few).

5) Fear: Fools have none, cowards are controlled by it, while Heroes over-ride it.

6) If you do not stand up for what you think is right, those that follow you will be forced to deal with a worse problem. "Those that follow" generally means your children.

7) Not trying is a THOUSAND times worse than rejection. People get rich by working hard, trying again and again and again, not by being smart.

8) No man is always right. The difference between a smart man and a fool, is that the fool never realizes he was wrong, and keeps repeating the same mistakes time and time again. The smart man eventually figures out he was wrong.

9) Good people take care of their own. Great people consider the Human Race their own.

10) There are three ways to get things done: Power, Skill, and Will. These three things are always needed. If you are failing, then you do not have sufficient amounts of them. As long as you have a minute amount of all, it does not really matter which of the three you increase. Most people go for additional power, as it is quick and has little negative consequences, but it takes a LOT of power to make a change. Skill takes longer to get but does more. Will is the easiest to get and a little bit of it goes a long way, but it has unfortunate consequences.

11) Truth is qualitatively different that lies. For this reason, often, the best way to detect for truth is not to analyze the content, but instead examine the media. Anyone in an insane asylum claiming to be a sane time traveler is crazy. Not because their claim must be false, but because if they REALLY were a time traveler they would shut up about it and get out of the asylum.

More things to think about:

Ia) Diplomacy is the act of solving conflicts peacefully. There are three methods to do this, 1) bribing with outside resources, 2) correcting misinformation/creating new ideas or 3) lying. Please note, if the parties involved have not made major errors and there are no outside resources available, the ONLY way to diplomatically solve a problem is to lie.

Ib) Politicians are in the business of Diplomacy ... rarely have legal access to outside resources ... and are not known for correcting misinformation or coming up with new ideas.

II) For time travel to be possible, multiple temporal dimensions are required. Otherwise there is no possibility of changing your position in time relative to everyone else. (Thinking spatially, if we live in a one dimensional line, you can not move "ahead of" or "behind" someone else - your order is fixed. At least two dimensions - a plane - are required to change position; even bending the line requires a 2nd dimension to exist). With multiple temporal dimensions, there is "space" for multiple universes to exist, it is probable that they exist and have similar physical laws of nature. Time Travel might bend the universe into a preztle, but it can not destroy it.

III) Republicans think Americans would rather vote for a morally upright idiot than a licentious genius, so they routinely insult Democratic Candidates's sexual morals. Democrats think Americans would rather vote for a licentious genius than a morally upright idiot, so they routinely insult Republican Candidates's intelligence. Cynics think Americans would rather vote for the guy with the best hair, so they do not vote. I am still not sure who is right, but I hope the Democrats are.

IV) Intelligence = Pattern Recognition.

IVa) Recognizing general pattern with minimal clues is called "Creativity". Example: Thinking wow, Beethoven Moonlight Sonata, if reversed, (minimal clue) could be the basis for (matches the) a good rock & roll song (pattern).

IVb) Recognizing exact patern duplication while ignoring "non-factors" is called "Logic". Example: 1 apple + 1 apple = 2 apples follows the rule called "Addition".

V) "Perfect" = fulfills intended purpose exactly. A perfect hammer is a bad screwdriver, and vice versa.

VI) The egg came first. Dinosaurs had eggs way before the chicken did. Evolution means the first egg was born to a creature that was not previously an egg layer. -OR- If you believe in the Creation story, then the Chicken came first, as God created them whole, not as eggs to mature. Of course then he made many tons of fake Dinosaur fossils just for laughs.

VII) The current belief that we are "lucky" the universe is conducive to life demonstrates ignorance of Darwin's theory of Evolution. Evolution tells us that life adapts itself so that it will thrive in it's current environment. So, OF COURSE the universe "allows" life to thrive in it. If the universe was different (say no gravity so no planets just dust clouds) then life would have evolved into large cloud like beings that NEED dust clouds to live in.
