A Look At The Word 'Twink' |
- What Does It Mean? - |
It's no secret. 'Twink' is one of the most wrongly-used terms that is assocciated with Roleplaying. Some people that misuse it are so drawn into their own defenition, they refuse to accept what the word really means. The misuse of this word is one of the many reasons that Roleplaying is a far from perfect system. I, for one, have heard so many unofficial defenitions of 'twink' that it is hard to distingush the real from the made up. Of course, the most popular of these is "Someone who Roleplays bad". This is not only an extremely broad defenition of the word, but also one that would fall under almost every other furre besides the user of the word, considering everyone has their own unique way of Roleplaying. What does it take to be 'bad' at Roleplaying? Simply not doing it the way you do. Now, unlike most people, I looked at the official defenition of the word before I started throwing it around. For those that dont know, the people that run Furcadia were nice enough to provide us with an official defenition. The general idea of a 'twink' is "Someone that purpously breaks RP rules". So, one that is 'bad' at Roleplaying isnt nessecarily a twink, unless they are doing it in an attempt to be annoying. |

- So Where Do Guns Come In? - |
You would be amazed at how many times users of modern firearms have had the word 'twink' thrown at them. I find it hard to belive that so many perfectly good Roleplayers use this word incorrectly. So, allow me to use my corner of the internet to try and cite some examples at why gun users do not fall under the defenition of twink. The general argument in this matter is that guns go against the intended Medival setting of Furcadia. Thus, gun users break the RP rule by going against this Miedival setting established by the makers of this game. However, I say again "Furcadia is intended to be in a Medival setting". This is not a rule. This is not regulation. It is simply a guideline. Therefore, when using a firearm, there is no rules being broken. Therefore, guns do not fall under the defenition of twink. |

- Powergaming - |
Even though I do not accept the term 'twink' to be associated with guns, I will agree with the few that belive guns are guilty of Powergaming (Or PGing). A powergamer can be described as one that performs moves so powerful that they are 1) Unrealistic and 2) Impossible to have a fun match against due to an inablity to defend. This is can be related to some of the following examples: Superhuman speed; Large 'One Hit - One Kill' moves with little or no preperation; Possesing abilitys they did not obtain during their character generation; ect. People can catagorize guns in this catagory due to the difficulty in dodging bullets and the fast speed that they can be redied. Again, I agree that even good modern Roleplayers cant avoid powergaming with a gun. It is tough to deal with their speed and power. However, some of the better modern Roleplayers I know treat guns more like a move than a weapon, I being one of them. When a Medival Roleplayer uses a powerful move, such as a large fireball, they must dedicate a few turns to preperation. In turn, these prepped moves can legaly be large, powerful, and maybe unblockable. The same goes with firearms. Due to their unique, powerful nature, a good Roleplayer spends several turns making their weapons ready to be more fair about their use. More about how Roleplaying with guns is located in the next section. |
