| This is a story that needs to be told! The subject will hate it but we can't let peoples feelings get in the way of a good story. The subject is Barbara Barrett, what would we do without her? Barb came to the area 3 years ago with her husband, the idea was to have the odd game of bowls and to relax. Well, anyone who knows Barb can tell that "relax" is not in her vocabulary, she goes ahead at full speed all of the time. One day on the way home from bowls with a new found friend called Gwen, the conversation turned to what Gwen had been doing in her spare time, Gwen explained to Barb that she had been doing volunteer work at The Koala Hospital for about 20 years, as barb was also an animal lover, she decided to check out the volunteer work at the hospital and the rest is history. |

| Twelve months after Barb had started the disastrous bushfires at Lake Cathie had erupted and Barb was one of The Koala Hospital team admitting, assessing and treating burnt koalas. She also helped write the protocol for the treament of the bushfire victims. Barb's main claim to fame is her fostering of "Perch Miracle", our "multi media star" koala. Barb nursed Perch Miracle in home care for eight and a half months until she was ready to take her place in yard 9 with our other bushfire victims. During all this time she still managed to fulfill her duties as team leader at the hospital, she also became the editor of Gumtips and became a rescuer. She took on the role as The Koala Hospital co-ordinator for 12 months along with being responsible for the workers rosters. When we formalised the "Walk and Talk" programme in December 2002, Barb had already been for the past year walking and talking with the visitors. Barb has swapped her editor of Gumtips role to become the adoption co-ordinator, however she still organises the printing, folding and mailing of Gumtips every 3 months. She makes us all tired just looking at her! Then there are the night rescues. Many of you may remember the story of Nightmare on Lord Street and then there was Nightmare at Kundabung and in this issue December 2003 Nightmare on Lord Street 2. Thank you Barbara from all your friends at the hospital and in the wider local community, and an enormous thank you from those around the world who all wish they could be there to help you. To them you are a hero, a caretaker for the koala. You have helped everyone in some way and it has realy made a big difference. The Koala Hospital |
