You enter text by simply typing in on the keyboard. The flashing cursor is where you begin. When you begin entering text into your document notice the spelling icon. The flashing cursor or insertion point will move across the screen in front of your text. (If you want to add blank lines in between your text, just press the enter key as many times as you want blank lines).

To change or correct your text you can use the four arrow keys or your mouse to move the flashing cursor to the space immediately after where you wish to change or to add something. Use the [left arrow key] to delete characters to the left to the cursor. Then, just type in any missing characters, sentences, etc. Word also has an [undo] button. Click on the curly arrow of the button one click to go back one step before the mistake occurred. The small arrow on the right of the button gives you a menu of your recent steps. What? You hit the button and really did not mean to? You changed your mind? Don't panic. Word also has a [redo] button that will allow you to move forward one step at a time.

When Word scrolls off the top of the screen, the scroll box in the scroll bar moves downward. This scroll box tells you where you are in relation to the insertion point or beginning of the document.

(If you are three quarters of the way through the document, the scroll box is three quarters down the side of the scroll bar). You can move the scroll box by using the [arrow] keys or by placing the arrow of the mouse over the box and dragging in up or down, or even by clicking any relative position inside the scroll bar. If you want to move one whole screenful at a time (from page 2 to page 3) press the [page up] or [page down] keys. To move the document up or down one line at a time, click the scroll arrow at the top or the bottom of the scroll bar.

Before you can move or copy a piece of text, you need to tell Word exactly which piece of text you want to move or copy. You can do this by highlighting the text. To highlight a piece of text :

  1. Move to the first character of the text you want to highlight
  2. Click, but do not release the left mouse button
  3. Drag the pointer through the word of section of text you want (Did you notice the text you selected has changed from black text on a white background to white text on a black background? This indicates which text you are selecting).
  4. Release the mouse button

  1. Move into the left margin next to one of the paragraphs
  2. Click once, this will highlight one line
  3. Click twice, this will highlight the entire paragraph
  4. Hold down the control key and click once to highlight the entire text

You highlighted text and really did not want to? Clicking the mouse pointer on any area in the text window that is not highlighted will cancel the highlight.

To delete a block of text simply highlight the text or paragraph you want to delete and press the [delete] key
