In Gullah one very common method of indicating the gender of a noun, especially of an animal, is by prefixing to the noun the word woman or man: uma cail 'woman child', i.e. 'girl'; uma hos 'mare'; uma cikin 'hen'; man cikin 'rooster'; uma hog 'sow'. Whereas many speakers of Southern American English frequently employ the same method in the case of certain words, especially when it is felt desirable to avoid the use of a taboo word, the use in Gullah is so common as to warrant mention here. | |||||||||
