Wedding Planning - Not for the Faint of Heart
Location! Location! Location! (continued)

So, what locations do I look for???

Well, that is really up to your personal taste.  Maybe you and your fianc are book lovers, you may want to look into libraries, some of the cities have beautiful gardens attached to libraries, perfect for intimate weddings.  And rental for such a location may be inexpensive as it is city property.  If you love to travel a train station could be great or even a train.  Historical locations, such as mansions can also afford a unique atmosphere.  But when looking into historical locations be sure to find out what restrictions they may impose.  Some places wont allow amplified music or allow any decorations to adorn walls.

Other ideas are restaurants.  Perhaps you want to have your reception at the same place you had your first date, check it out.  Many restaurants have banquet rooms or are willing to rent out the location on the day it is normally closed.  Since its a restaurant they already have tables, chairs, linens, china, etc. This could be a real bargin.  Hotels are a common place for weddings, and usually have a number of different packages to choose from.  Lodges, Horse Ranches, parks, they all have their possibilities, even corn fields can be a great location (preferably after harvest).

Think about the kind of people you are. Do you love the outdoors? Or hate bugs?  Do you love water? Or the mountains?  Are you a fan of the rustic look? Or do you lean more towards clean contemporary lines?

The answers to all these questions will help you in your search, also remember that if you choose to have an outdoor event, to have a back up plan in case Mother Nature makes it rain on your day. (And despite the famous song its actually considered lucky if it rains on your wedding day. Go figure!)  Tents, umbrellas and tarps can be costly but if your location doesnt offer you an alternative in case of bad weather then you need to have one yourself.  Some locations even require you to have a back up plan, think of that added cost to you when looking into a location.

Another thing to do when searching is go to your local Library and check out the tourist information on your area.  They usually have tons of information on restaurants and hotels and can give you some good ideas on places to look into.  As well as offering you location ideas the tourist information can tell you about events that might be of interest to any out of town guests that will be attending your wedding.

              * Don't forget to go out of your way for those out of towners, they are making a long jorney
to come see you.  Make up a welcome box or bag and have it at the hotel, filled with local
info, and maybe a few of your favorite places around town.  This will go a long way to make
them feel welcome and they will be grateful you took the time to remember them.
(I'll talk more about welcome bags later on the site)

And lastly, when searching for locations dont discount references from family and friends.  I found my site because my mother heard about it from a co-worker.  Who knew the place my mom told me about would end up being the site of my dreams?
