


First baseman Mike John Sweeney was born on July 22, 1973 in California he graduate from Ontario (CA) High School where his team went 26-0 and to their state baseball championship in 1990. Was drafted by the royals in the 10th Round of the 1991 June Draft. Called up to the Royals in 1995 finally got a chance to spend a full season with the big league club in 1998. Started out as a catcher but had trouble adjusting to major league catching. Just before the 1999 season Mike was rumored to be on the trading block. Many teams ask for Sweeney but deal was taken. Sweeney went to batted .361 in spring training earning a right to stay with the club. On May 24 First Baseman Jeff King retired and Mike Sweeney was put in King place. Mike went on to bat .322 with 22 homeruns and 102 RBIs. Mike a very reglions man pray things would work out for him and it did. In 2000 Mike was selected to the AL All-Stars Team as a reserve First baseman. He finished the year batting .333 with 206 hits, 29 homeruns and a club record 144 RBIs. Off the field Mike talks a lot to area high schools and church group and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes group.
