| On Forever Knight we hear rather than see Schanke for the first time. He's taken over Nick's crime scene at the museum and he's badgering the forensics team because he's unhappy with their performance. Nick's offhand remark to a fellow officer about smelling his cologne automatically cements a certain image about the loud mouth detective before we even set eyes on him. As far as first impressions go Schanke has a used car salesman air about him. He's fast talking, greasy, and about as untrustworthy as a dime store watch. | |||||||||||||||||||

| Actor John Kapelos is the only holdover from the failed pilot Nick Knight shot for CBS several years before. The lines are pretty much identical but Kapelos manages to make his second stab at Schanke enjoyable and tweaks his performance just enough so it's not a carbon copy of his work in the pilot movie. In Nick Knight Schanke could very well have been a used car salesman but in Forever Knight Schanke has a slight endearing quality even if you can't quite pinpoint what it is. Perhaps it's that despite all his posturing, Schanke is a good cop and he cares about his job and in getting the killers in society off the streets. | |||||||||||||||||||

| Public servants are notoriously underpaid and Schanke's no frills wardrobe in Dark Knight is a reflection of that. It is also in direct contrast to the dangerous quality of Nick's mysterious, golden boy attire. While a dark palate dominates Nick's clothing, Schanke wears more grays and browns. Schanke blends in with just about every other law enforcement officer that has ever graced the small screen. His suits are not expensive but practical although hints of his colorful personality are evident in his choice of ties which add a splash of color.
