Dark Knight
In many ways it seems appropriate that the first shot of Forever Knight is that of Deborah Duchene as Janette. The back covers of the series DVD sets proclaim the show to be "stylish and sexy". I would certainly add mysterious to the lot and all three would definitely describe Janette's presence on Forever Knight. The camera slowly pans across a candle lit room and in a far corner stands Janette turning and walking towards the camera. Her pale skin, long black hair, the simple silver crown adorning her hair, and the simple gossamer lavender gown she wears creates an ethereal vision. This image of Janette is one of the show's most indelible sights; so much so that it was also included in Forever Knight's haunting opening title sequence.
I always thought that it was a shame that when the show revisIted the events of that night Janette's wardrobe was changed. The change added a degree of aristocracy to Janette that was not suggested in this initial version. Subsequent episodes tell us that Janette seduced a religiously disenfranchised Nicholas de Brabant in the aftermath of his return from the Crusades, however to me Janette's clothing in 13th century Paris  suggest not a woman who seduces with whispered promises of eternal power and conquest but a woman who looks like a pagan angel. She would be someone that Nicholas would see as offering him something that would be able to fulfill him in the way his church failed to.
