                                      Guardamar Del Segura

Guardamar Del Segura is a typical, Spanish coastal village located at the mouth of the Segura river.

The history of Guardamar goes back to the 10th century, when the moors inhabited it, but there are remains of both Phoenician and Iberian settlements to be found here as well . Rabita Califal de Las Dunas (Moslem Monastery) , Castillo De Guardamar (castle), Yacimiento Iberico Cabezo Lucero (Iberian archaeological site) and Muralla Fortaleza Fenicia (Defensive walls and Phoenician fortress).

The town of Guardamar had to be rebuilt after being completely destroyed by an earthquake. Pine, eucalyptus and palm trees have been planted behind he nearly twelve-kilometre stretch of sand dunes and beach to prevent the erosion of one of Spain's finest beaches.

Guardamar can offer the sea sports enthusiasts a choice of sailing, wind surfing, water skiing, scuba diving, jet skiing and canoeing. The Marina de las Dunas at the mouth of the river, has mooring space for nearly 500 boats.

Guardamar Del Segura has other sports facilities as well, like the "Las Rabosas" Sports Centre and the magnificent Municipal Sports Centre with its Olympic swimming pool, 3 football fields, basketball courts, tennis courts and much more.

Visiting some of the local fiestas in Guardamar is a must. During the summer there are many cultural events as well, such as "Jordadas Fotograficas" - a photography exhibition and workshop, which is an important national event that takes place in May and June each year.
