Types of Housing
What types of
housing are available for your lovebirds? What are the advantages
and disadvantages of cages, bird rooms and aviaries? Can your
lovebirds live in the wilderness?
1. Types of
Housing
There are several ways to house your lovebirds. The best living
arrangement depends on what type of bird you have: a pet lovebird,
ornaments or breeder birds. The four most common types of housing
are cages, indoor bird rooms, outdoor aviaries, and the wilderness.

2. Bird Rooms
A bird room is a room that is
designated for your birds. Usually, a bird room is a spare bedroom
decorated with branches, bird stands, perches and toys. The benefit
of bird rooms is that the birds have a lot of space and can fly
everywhere. However, lovebirds will probably ruin your furniture and
carpeting. You also have to make sure that there is enough sunlight,
and that the living environment is suitable.

3. Outdoor Aviaries
Outdoor aviaries are mostly for people who have many breeder
lovebirds. Aviaries take up a lot of space, and the birds are
subject to the harsh outdoors. Outdoor aviaries are not recommended
for people with pet lovebirds. For more detailed information about
aviaries, take a look at specialized lovebird books.

4. Wilderness
Some people in rural areas let
their birds live outside like wild birds. The owners provide food
for the birds outside. This is a very dangerous way to house
lovebirds. Losses will be very high, because there are many
predators, and they will die easily in urban environments. Also,
lovebirds are not native to habitats outside Africa, and there are
laws against introducing non-native species to natural environments.

5. Cages
The most popular method of housing lovebirds is indoors, in a cage.
The articles in this section will deal mainly with pet lovebirds
that live in cages, but there is also information that relates to
bird rooms.
