WhatIfSports Field, Santa Fe -- In the last of a flurry of deadline deals Harry Jacquez was acquired in a five player deal with the New York Highlanders. Santa Fe sent outfield prospect Charles Jones, relief pitching prospect Sammy Maduro and veteran Luis Martin to the Highlanders in return for Jacquez and second base prospect Vinny Holliday. "We hope to have him the rotation by the May 31st PM2 game," GM Geoff Taylor said when he addressed reporters on Friday. "We think Harry will make a great addition to this staff now and in the future and we look for him to make an impact immediately.
Certainly, Jacquez will be an improvement to a pitching staff that ranks in the bottom of every major pitching statistic. While Cruz, Palmeiro and Duran provide veteran knowledge, the 28 year old Jacquez can back up his years with a much better lifetime ERA and win-loss percentage. What's left to be seen is who in the rotation will move to the bullpen. Most prognosticators can't come to an agreement on who will be moving, but they do agree on who won't lose their starting spots; Martinez and Juarez. Leaving those two out of the equation one may think that former ace Willie Cruz may be on his way to the bullpen. Either way, if Taylor's words are true, we will know soon.
