| Evaluation of Previous Attempts to End the Problem of Genocide Ever since the Holocaust and the Trials at Nuremberg following the end of WWII, there have been many attempts to end the cruel acts of genocide. The most renowned would be the gathering to create The Convention of the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. This document would clearly define what genocide was, how to determine the extremities of genocide and what the punishment should be. This attempt to end genocide was one that has been more effective than any others because it actually announced that genocide is a crime under international law in which the contracted parties undertake to prevent and to punish. (Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, www.tufts.edu/departments/fletcher/multi/texts/BH225.txt ) Other organizations have been created to not only give awareness to the problems surrounding genocide but also to help solve the problem. One such online organization is Campaign to End Genocide at www.endgenocide.org/, which believes that through strong and effective international institutions, coupled with the political will to make them work, the world can end genocide. This and many other organizations and campaigns are exploiting the awareness of genocide and to increase world peace. These attempts have been so far successful in making the world more aware of the problem but has it really helped to stop the horrible mass killing? Even though these attempts claim what the problem is and give a punishment, there is no way to erase the nationalistic feelings that the Hutsu and the Tutsi feel; there is no way to take away the imperialistic ideas and intolerance that still exists today. So while those factors cannot be helped directly through letters and organizations, the fact that governments, media and the public were made aware of these events and that they can help to lessen or stop the actions, then the attempts were successful in that way.
