ARTIST IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Interview by Justin Boccitto
SEESAW cast member & Broadway performer,
STACEY SIPOWICZ
JB: Where are you from originally?
SS: Tewksbury, MA - about 30 minutes north of Boston.
JB: How old were you when you began dancing?
SS: I began taking tap/jazz classes when I was 10 years old. I took tap, jazz & ballet classes throughout high school and performed in my first musical, South Pacific, my freshman year of high school. I majored in dance in college, during which time my focus turned more towards modern dance. I graduated after three years (I was eager to get started!), moved back to Boston and joined Impulse Dance Company - which is a modern/jazz company, directed by Adrienne Hawkins. A few years later, I moved to NYC - where I started auditioning for dance companies and musicals. A little over a year after auditioning in the City, I was offered my first professional musical theater job as 'ensemble/Iris understudy' in FAME, The Dance Musical, - a European tour! Wahoo!
JB: Who do you consider your mentor or significant teacher?
SS: Two significant teachers of mine were Debi Hanley & Adrienne Hawkins. I took class at Debi's studio growing up and from an early age, she instilled a strong sense of discipline in me, as well as a joy for dance, which turned into somewhat of a hunger for dance - I think by the time I was a senior in high school, I was in 10 dance numbers in the recital! And when I took Adrienne's class in college, I fell in love with her style and was intrigued by her knowledge of 'dance mechanics'. Under Adrienne's guidance, I matured artistically and advanced technically. To this day, I am still hoping that she writes a book detailing her technique!
JB: What was your favorite experience in theater or dance and why?
SS: I feel so grateful to have had so many amazing experiences in the theater - touring through the US and Europe, performing on Broadway in Cabaret, meeting & working with numerous celebrities in shows & benefits... Though, I think among the most moving experiences are the benefits I have been a part of, in which so many talented people donate their time and energy to raising money and awarenss for charities. The generosity of the theater community is truly amazing...
