What are Grouped Social Rides?

For those wondering what they are it’s very simple.  We sort out set routes at Bunya and Daisy Hill. The routes and distance are designed so that should users wish, they can find their way back fairly easily.  By keeping a standard route, riders of any level will become familiar with the trails.  We do the ride in groups of varying fitness levels leaving at intervals with the aim of all arriving back at the cars around the same time for a good social chat.  This means you can ride closer to your level of fitness with like minded people.  It also keeps you motivated to stay with your group or eventually advance to a higher fitness level group.  These rides are a great fitness and skill tool and keep you in the saddle instead of on the side of the track talking while waiting.

These Rides are NOT Races, NOT Competitions and NOT a Competitive Event. They are a serious but still social ride and unless a rider indicates that they wish to drop from the group, the group should finish together.

All riders who choose to come along on these rides MUST observe proper trail etiquette, give way to other trail users when appropriate.

Who Can Come Along?

As long as you have the fitness/skills to keep up with the group you choose to ride with then anyone can.  The courses have a variety of terrain and technical sections. Group 5 is intended for new riders and the Group 5 course is usually shorter and avoids the most difficult sections. There are also opportunities to bail out early if you can't make the full distance.  We encourage you to ride with riders of like fitness.  This is to limit the effect of slower riders feeling they are holding up their group because of riders sandbagging to be with their mates or faster riders feeling fustrated because the group may be too slow for them.

What if you want to come?

Bike - Having your bike in good condition is paramount. It's not fair on the other riders in your group if their effort comes to nil because you didn't get your bike serviced. Accidents and mechanical mishaps do happen of course that's part of MTB'ing.

Map - Every rider should print out and bring a copy of the map and try to make themselves familiar with the route before the ride.

Start Time - Be prompt. As the groups are trying to get maximum benefit from these rides so the start time is prompt. You will get left behind if you are late and not on your bike, ready to go at the start time. They won't wait just because you pulled into the carpark with 2 minutes to go.

Stick together - the groups must stay together, this helps everyone keep motivated.  If you wish to leave your group for any reason, advise another member so the group does not waste time looking for you.

What Group should I ride in?

The table below gives a few indicators of what group you should be riding in. Beginners should start in Group 5 and work their way up. Other riders should start with a group they think they can ride comfortably with. There will always be a speed variation within groups and when you are finding that you are waiting at each regroup point it might be time to step up and become the one everyone else waits for in a higher group.
