Lesson Plan Report

INTRODUCTION

The topic was originally planned to be taught in three (3) lessons but due to the instructional strategy applied, two lessons were combined and the third lesson was used to for students' feedback and assessment. I initially put students into groups of 5 and allocated them to computers, which have Internet connection. I then took them through the first and second combined lessons and gave them group work to be submitted at the third lesson. Students in groups located sites with relevant information on the topic and gave their feedback at the third lesson. They were then asked to submit their group work via e-mail to me for assessment. .

SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES

The lesson in general was successful. The students were able to submit their group work with evidence of individual participation with most of the group submitting their work before the deadline. However there were a few challenges. Students at first found it a little difficult typing the appropriate phrases to help them locate the relevant sites for their work but repeated trials helped them to solve the problem with little guidance. .

CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION AND LOGISTICS

Due to the limited number of computers available, students were put into 10 groups of five (5) with the computers widely spaced apart. The computers were properly set up except the computer for group 2 which was abnormally slower. The student computer ratio was 5:1 but later in the lesson it has to be increased to 6:1 due to the poor performance of one of the computers. Students worked independently with intermittent guided tips from me.

SUGGESTED CHANGES

Though the lesson was relatively successful, the following changes would be effected if I should teach the lesson again: Ø Students should be taught earlier, on how to use the search engines so as to avert undue delays Ø Computers should be inspected and tested before the lesson so that preventable disruptions could be contained during lessons.

FEEDBACK

Feedback from students was very encouraging probably due to the technological base of the lesson. The Biology Teacher has to help me with relevant reference books to help me teach the lesson. The Head of Computer Department was also of immense help by making the Laboratory freely accessible for the lesson. The School Administration provided funds for the acquisition of diskettes for the students.

ASSESSMENT

Class Participation and Individual Contribution (20%) Score Sheets were prepared for class participation. Though marks were not immediately awarded during the lesson that was done immediately after the lesson and was very affective. Group Work (30%) Based on group inputs on the group work, individuals in a group were awarded the same marks. Individual's Contribution to Group Work (20%) Marks were also awarded for evidence of individual contribution to group work.. End of Project/lesson Test (30%) A short objective test was conducted to assess students' behavioural changes based on lesson goals/objectives. In all, students' performance in all the areas was above average hence being successful.
