Created by Beverly Hills 90210 producer Darren Star, this half hour sitcom is about the behind the scenes dramas of the cast of a one-hour high school drama TV show called Grosse Pointe. Rumoured to draw on Star's real life experiences with 90210, the cast of Grosse Pointe is full of characters who live up to, and exceed, all the gossip we've heard come out of 90210 (or any popular show featured on Entertainment This Weekend, for that matter). I spent the first episode gleefully figuring out who was supposed to be like Shannon Doherty, who was the Tori Spelling, and who was the Luke Perry. These caricatures are hilarious. In the first episode, a wheelchair bound kid catches one of the "teen" actors without his hairpiece, and uses this to blackmail his way into a speaking part instead of his walk-on role.
The show has lots of potential for outrageousness, and with the dual plotlines of Grosse Pointe and the Grosse Pointe within Grosse Pointe, it is something you'd want to watch every week to keep up with all the twists and turns. It is also well acted. Unfortunately, where I live at least, Grosse Pointe has been cursed with a horrible time slot (Sundays at 7:30) and if the Spelling clan doesn't kill it, then this may.
