It took quite some time, but Liverpool eventually signed German International Christian Ziege from Premieship rivals Middlesbrough for 5.5million pounds last summer(2000). Ziege was happy to come to the Reds but he didn't have a good 1st season as he sufferd from injury and also couldn't get a place in the side as local lad Jamie Carragher made the left back spot his own.
Christian actually started his football career as a keeper but after he spent some time in his native Germany with some local clubs, he then became an outfield player. He was so good that he attracted the eyes of Bayrn Munich who signed him when he was just 18.
Christian is very good from dead ball situations and likes to attack. He is a versatile player and can play both at left wing-back and left-midfield.
Christian's time at Liverpool hasn't been as he would have expected. Though, he is very experienced, having played in Italy and Germany and is also a regular in the National team, he still can't get into the Liverpool team! He was overlooked for both the F.A Cup and UEFA Cup final, where he didn't even make the bench!
There's been a lot of speculation about his future, with Tottenham reportedly wanting to sign him. And with Riise, now at Anfield, Ziege's days look to be numbered.
Ziege, has finally, left Anfield to Tottenham Hotspurs, after he realised that he didn't have a chance in the Liverpool team. He, now looks to revive his career in London with the help of former England Coach, Glenn Hoddle. |
