Gregory Vignal was bought from French side Montpellier for 500,000 pounds in September '00. Houllier bought him, saying he was 'a prospect for the future'.
'It was an easy decision' siad the young left-back when he heard about Liverpool's interest in him. Vignal had spent all his football career at Montpellier before making the move to Anfield. 'It was a wrench to leave Montpellier but I have to think about my career'.
Vignal won some silverware with the Fench U-18 squad when he helped them to victory in the European Youth Championships in which he played in every game but one. This was when he caught the eye of the Liverpool Manager.
Gregory made his 1st team debut in the 3rd round of the F.A Cup against Rotherham United at Anfield in January. Last season he made 7 appearances in total for the 1st team but didn't score.
The fact that Gerard Houllier is French influenced Vignal's move to Anfield and he is enjoying himself so far. He may not be in the 1st team all the time, but he is young and has a lot of years ahead of him. |
