Vladimir Smicer came to Liverpool during the start of the '99-'00 season. He had the daunting task of following in the footsteps on the departing Steve Mcmanaman. He didn't have the best of starts to the Anfield career as he was struck by injury in his first season and that totally distrupted his first season at Anfield.

Vladimir started his football career in his native Czech Republic with Slavia Prague, before joining French outfit, RC Lens where he enjoyed sucess, winning the French League in the '97-'98 season for the first time, in the Club's history.

Vladimir is a small and very tricky, too-footed player. He is probably the most exciting player in the Liverpool team. He can play either at the flanks or behind the forwards. He is an excellent team player and can score as well as create for others. (Not a bad replacement for Macca!!) And, it is no secret that his best mate is his Czech team-mate, Patrik Berger.

He is a regular in the Czech national team and played a big part in the Czechs' surprise run to the '96 European Cup Finals. And though the Czechs, didn't get past the group stage in the '00 European Cup, he was the star of the Czech team as he scored the two goals in the Czechs' only win against against Denmark.
