John Arne Riise was Gerard Houllier's first signing after Liverpool's treble winning season. He was signed from french club Monaco during the summer break for 4 million pounds.

Riise was on the verge of joining Jean TIgana (former coach), in Fulham but when Gerard Houllier showed interest, it was an easy decision for the Norweigan to make. Riise scored in Liverpool 3-2 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions league to get his Anfield career of to a flying start. This goal was ironically scored in Monaco, his former club. This was the first of many to come.

SInce joining Liverpool, Riise has had a big impact on the club. He can play at left midfield and at left defence. He has a Patrik Berger like left foot and he also has a good eye for goal. He has also made a step from U-21 to the national Norweigan team.

Riise scored that amazing goal against Manchester United in the 3-1 win over the Red Devils and he had continued to score as the season has progressed. He won a championship with Monaco in France and he will be looking to do the same with Liverpool in his first season.

Riise was also named 'Athlete of the Year' in Norway for 2001.
