Many people were surprised when Gerard Houllier signed veteran scottish player, Gary McAllister on a free in the summer of 2000. Gary McAllister was told he was surplus to requirements at Coventry City and was told he could leave and as soon as Houllier heard of this, he signed the then 36 year old.

Gary McAllister, a former scottish international made his debut agaisnt Arsenal in which he was sent off. He then during that season came back strong. Showing his experience and determination in Liverpool's treble success as he scored agaisnt Barcelona in the UEFA cup semi-final and in the final against Alaves. And how can anyone forget his stunnig 44 yard strike against Everton in stoppage time to give Liverpool the three.

Macca was rewarded with a one-year extension to his contract at Anfield. He is a very experienced player and is good going forward and also gets quite a few goals. Macca, qiut international football and so is entirely focused on Liverpool,

After Macca's great first season, it is very unlikely that Liverpool will renew his contract after the '01-'02 season. He does bring a lot to the side but we have to remember that at the age of 37, maybe it's time to say goodbye to the lovely sport, we call football.

Macca has made it no secret that he wants to become a coach when his Anfield career is finally over which is likely to be this season.
