Vegard Heggem was the first signing of Roys Evans and Gerard Houllier during their time as joint managers. He was signed from  Rosenborg in July '98 for 3.5million pounds. Heggem didn't take long to get used to 'English' football and put on some good displays at right-back.

Heggem wanted a tougher challenge and so he passed up Champions league football with Rosenborg to come to Anfield and he claimed the right-back spot, holding off  Harkness, Jason McAteer and fellow Nowegian, Bjorn Tore Kvarme.

Vegard had never payed outside Norway before coming to Liverpool. His career began at the tender age of 7 in 1982 with local club, Rennebu. He played there for 9 years and then went on to play for Orkdal and Rosenborg before coming to Anfield.

Vegard is a versatile player and is equally comfortable at right back and right mid-field. He loves to attack and is capable of scoring spectacular goals like the one against Bradford in the 1999-'00 season and the one against Middlesborough the season before that.

Hegeem didn't have a good season as he suffered from persistent hamstring problems and was forced to watch Markus Babbel claim the right-back spot. Heggem was also injured for some time during the previous season and when he wasn't found it hard to get in the side with former Anfield favourite, Song putting on good displays.

A regular with the Nowegian squad, he didn't take part in France '98 or Euro '00 (though he was part of the squad) as he suffered from injury problems.

Heggem will be hoping this season brings what the last two seasons have failed to bring, regular 1st team football.

Heggem turned down a loan move to an unknown team this season ('01-'02) and since he hasn't played in the first team for such a long time it looks like his Anfield career could be all but over.
