Markus Babbel came to Liverpool from German giants, Bayern Munich on a Bosman free. What a bargain! Markus had such a good first season with Liverpool, having made the right back spot his own. Babbel was so good that he was the only outfield player to start all 38 league games last season.
Markus Babbel started his career in his native Germany and has never played outside Germany. He had only played for Bayern Munich but went on loan to Hamburg during his stay there, before coming to Liverpool. Markus said that coming to Liverpool was fufilling a childhood dream.
Babbel is a very versatile defender and can play a right back in a flat back four, centre back, and can also play in a three man defence. He prevers to play at centre-back. He likes to go up at free-kicks and scored 6 goals for Liverpool last season which included a memorable goal in his native Germany in the UEFA Cup final aginst Alaves.
Babbel has been a German International since 1995 and was in the German squad for France '98, Euro '96, and Euro '00. He has now taken a break from international duty to focus more on his Liverpool career.
Babbel is a hard working defender and always gives his full 100% on the field. He is an essential part of the Red's defence.
Unfortunately for Babbel, his '01-'02 season was cut short when he was said to have a very rare virus and this is going to keep him out for the whole season but he should be back at Anfield in time for next season.
