Advanced Weaponry Information

Here are some interesting things to keep in mind regarding advanced weaponry. This is conceptual, no game mechaics here. This should give a good idea of what these types of weapons are and those with advanced weapon skills of tech level 8-10 would have heard of them, if not used them before.(1)

Laser (Light Amplified by Stimulated Emission of Radiation)

Ion Weapons

Plasma Weapons

Particle Beam Weapons

Electromagnetic Kinetic Weapons

This is one of the broadest categories of weapons in science fiction. To make it a bit easier to understand, this subject will be cut into smaller pieces.

Pulse Theory

In the early 1990s, research by the United States Government developed a branch of electromagnetic weapons that seemed to have solved the problems inherent in gauss and rail weapons. Called "Pulse Theory" by the researchers, this offshoot provided man portable firepower almost equal to that of a gauss weapon. By using two opposing magnets, the rear magnet fitted solid and the forward magnet with a small aperture in the center of it, the system could propel magnets at close to the same speeds as gauss weapons at a much lower cost. While seeming to be the alternative to gauss/rail weapons, pulse theory weapons would not displace the forerunners. Pulse theory weapons have a much shorter range then either gauss or rail weapons. The accuracy of pulse theory weapons is also much lower. The best use for pulse theory weapons was for artillery (by 1999 military documents) and small infantry weapons.

GURPS: Rifts

RIFTS

Armor
Take the MDC of the armor, and call it ablative DR. That means for every 4 points of damage done to the armor that doesn't penetrate, the armor loses 1 point of DR at TL 7 or less. For TL 8 armors this ratio is 1/5, and for 9 it is 1/6. TL armors of 10 and better are so rare as to be dealt with on a case by case basis. This makes for a very small increase in bookkeeping during combat (assuming you can do math in your head) and makes it simple and quick to convert all armor. All other systems remain the same, including the vastly reduced weights of armors as listed in the Rifts manuals.

Targeting Systems
Targeting systems take a beating in Rifts , where only the expensive giant robots are equipped with an IR Searchlight. This device was invented during WWII and obsolete today. Personally, I'm all for this, because I want any victory of the PC's to be theirs and not their HUD's doing. Id like GRIFTS to have a very 'old west' feel, one that doesn't lend itself to 'fire and forget' missiles or smartlinked weapons being carried by the PCs. Such equipment will be kept primarily to military assigned personnel, and will be difficult to aquire and only in very limited quantities. Ranges below are given in standard GURPS terms, weight is given in pounds.

Weapon Types

Laser: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. In other words, a coherent beam of photons, or light, with enough energy to do damage.

Ion Blaster: Basically an electrolaser. To better simulate electrolasers, the damages on these weapons were reduced to levels that happen to be almost useless against modern armor. Against unarmored opponents and many beasties, however, they are just the thing.
Remember that an opponent in metal armor is not only hit at +2, but does not get any of his armor's PD or DR against the attack.

Grenade Launcher: The different calibers of the different launcher grenades (and their compatibility) are listed below:

NG "Mighty Mite" Series (for the NG-Super combo): 18mm NG "Mega-Bullet" Series (for the NG-LG6 combo): 23mm
*Note that the NG Mega-Bullet can chamber Coalition mini-grenades, but not the other way around.
Coalition Mini-Grenades (for every g. l. in the Coalition arsenal): 22mm
WI E-102 (Wellington's only line of grenades): 26mm

Grenade damage (for the Coalition model; more to come) is as follows:

Coalition Mini-Grenades Dmg Radius(yds.)

Fragmentation: 6dx3[2d] 4.0

Shaped Charge: 4dx2(10) 0.5

Concussion: 6dx3 4.0

Particle Beam: This is a particle acceleration weapon, one that emits a raw stream of conventional particles. Since there is mass emitted, there is recoil, and a distinctive whine as the weapon discharges.

Plasma Ejector: This is in the flamer class of weapons, either a plasma rifle (unless otherwise specified) or a more powerful, much more deadly fusion gun. Since it emits a steady, continuous pulse, it does not have recoil, but they are usually very heavy, and a certain amount of strength is required to hold it steady (i.e. the Firehose Effect).

Rail Gun: An weapon that magnetically accelerates ferrous projectiles, known as a Gauss Pistol in the extreme low calibers (all but abandoned by Rifts weaponers in the rush to find something to penetrate modern armor) or as a Gauss Gun in the extreme high calibers (a thin distinction observed mostly by highly developed militaries). It, too, suffers from the Firehose Effect that increases its minimum ST without assessing recoil penalties.

Pump Pistol or Rifle: The term 'pump' was most likely first put forth by illiterate farmers in the farmlands of the NGR. Triax was referring to them as at the time, and for many the name just wouldn't stick (can't imagine why). Most people call them 'mini grenades' although that is more properly used on the type launched by the C-14 "Firebreather" type platforms. More ovservant individuals call them 'micro grenades' and that term is probably going to last. The projectiles these 'pump' guns fire are just that, 12mm shaped charge grenades. It's also an interesting note that this weapon was developed for use against opponents who could somehow sense large amounts of electrical energy in storage (like Neuron Beasts), and the pump action was settled upon, rather than a faster, more modern feed to keep use of the expensive ammunition for these weapons to a minimum.

Plasma Cartridge Weapon: A platform for igniting plasma cartridges, which store a great amount of energy chemically, in a suspended crystalline matrix (TB alert!). Since the reciever has to zap each cartridge's priming hole with a low-power laser (good for 10,000 shots on an internal 10KWH cell), the super-hard lens between the laser and the chamber must be cleaned often and is usually the most likely to fail; treat any critical failure as the lens shattering under the intense heat of the plasma being emitted. The laser will be destroyed, too (5000cr for the laser and 5000 for the lens from your friendly Naruni Enterprises Dealer, half that if you make the repair yourself (Electronic Ops (Weapons)/TL10 at -1). Plasma Cartridge weapons are otherwise just like Particle Beam Weapons.

For those who lack the strength, it is recommended that they be assessed double the penalties. Note also that they require both ammunition and energy.

Alternate Firearms Tables for GURPS

The generic weapons are standard, mid-priced examples of the type.

Weapons that can fire semi-automatically as well as on full-auto have a star after their ROF. If they have two stars after the ROF, then they are capible of firing three round bursts as well. The notation of BA means Bolt Action, and LA means Lever Action. S/PA stands for semi/pump action. The pump action guns have a ROF of (2~) rather than the GURPS standard of (3~), because it is my opinion that you cannot work a pump action as fast as you can pull the trigger. There is an exception in the case of older shotguns, like the Winchester Model 97, where you could hold the trigger back while working the action. The sources used in making this list are GURPS: High Tech, BTRC's Guns!Guns!Guns!, and Jane's Security and COIN Systems 1994-95. My use of these sources are not to be construed by any of these groups to be an attack on their copyrights and does not imply any approval by them of these tables or notes. Weapons with an star (*) after their name are ones that I've built with 3G^3 and those with two (**) are from GURPS:Cyberworld. The prices assume that this is a decade or so into the future and may need some tweeking for your game world.....

NOTES

The Rapide pistol is a hypothetical pistol chambered for the same cartidge as an equally hypothetical French personal defense weapon. They use a hyper-velocity 4mm bottlenecked cartridge that goes at over 4000fps. The sonic crack is louder than the powder explosion that fires the bullet. This round is not affected by the optional "pistol caliber JHP expansion" rule in G:High Tech

The Vector revolvers are rectangular, with a saw type handle and a fully enclosed cylinder. It is reloaded by swinging the front down and replacing the cylinder. The gun is fired with the index finger on the side of the gun and squeezing the grip with the other fingers. This is a problem for fast-draws and weapon retention situations. Roll vs. DX (at -5 if you're wrestling for the gun) to avoid an accidental discharge.

The Viper is a hypothetical civilian target rifle chambered for the same 5.7mm round that the FN P90 PDW uses. It is part of FN's attempt to regain market share after the so-called "assault weapons" ban that stopped the importation of most European semi-automatic rifles, and to help expand sales of the P90 and of the 5.7mm round.

The Jackhammer is a bullpup streetsweeper type of shotgun. It uses a ten shot ammo cassette (basically a revolver cylinder on steriods) that clips into the stock. The ammo cassette can used seperately with a special device that allows it to be used like a Claymore mine. This is used with a special non-lethal flash-bang shell in riot control situations. This shell cannot be fired from the shotgun itself, as it detonates too soon, and might injure the firer.

The XM-20 is a prototype laser rifle based on reports of the Army's tests with such weapons. It fires once per turn with either a laser beam or as an electrolaser. The "ammo" is a belt of batteries very similar to what TV news cameramen use when covering stories. The rifle weighs 7lbs, and the batteries weight 13.5lbs.

The AK-95 is a hypothetical near future decendant of the AK family of weapons. It fires a caseless APS round based off of the current 5.45mm round. The choice of an APS round was due to increasing prevelance of kevlar body armor in western forces. It was designed such that AK-74's could be easily modified by simply re-chambering the barrel and issuing new magazines to the troops. There are RPK and AKSU versions of it as well.

The Type 65 is Japan's current service rifle. It uses a special reduced load 7.62mm NATO round to avoid recoil problems. By ajusting the gas port, it can use normal 7.62mm ammo. (Use range and damage from the FN FAL)

The Type 96 is a caseless Japanese assault rifle from a game I once ran, set during a war between us and a Russo-Japanese alliance. It is a bullpup with a flat top-mounted magazine similar to the one used by the FN P90. The Type 98 Light Machine Gun is from the same game. It has a conventional layout, with two 75 round drums and a dual feed mechanism.

The FN P90 is an excellent PDW from Belgium. It fires the new 5.7mm round, and has a radical, but effective, design. It is effective against light body armor and flack jackets out to 200 meters, and is light, durable, and is very streamlined for use from within vehicles.

The H&K PDW is simply an MP5K with a fixed stock. The MP-10 and -11 are the MP-5 chambered for 10mm and .45ACP, respectively.

The GW-2000 is a hypothetical caseless pump action grenade launcher. It looks like a SPAS-12 shotgun with a fixed stock. The GW-2100 is a similar weapon which attaches to the barrel of most assault rilfes. U.S. troops refer to this combo as a "Ripley Special".

The MG4 is based on the rumors of the Germans making a Machine gun in the same caliber as the G11 caseless assault rifle.

(1)This information was taken off a RIFTS web site and authored by Dustin Ramsey.

(2)~ 1996 by Gil "Brenden" Young
Borrowed and modified for GRIFTS by James Beadle, 2001.

(3)This is not to be concidered a complete list, but is one of the better Ive found online, and after a couple hours of modifications now fits GRIFTS rather than GURPS: RIFTS as intended by the original author. My thanks to Gil Young for the work he invested in this list, and I hope he doesnt mind the modifications Ive made.
