History |

The actual origins of Tarot are unknown, though the first known deck of cards which has been recorded appeared in the 15th century in Italy, and were used in a game called Tarochii. This deck was a hand painted deck made as a wedding present between the Sforza and Visconti Families. Playing cards of any kind are mentioned in Europe around fifty years early, but this is the first known tarot deck as we recognise them today. Gypsy is an abbreviation for Egyptian, and that the gypsy's brought the Tarot with them from Egypt |

Generally tarot is considered to either originate from the Mediterranean area, either ancient Egypt or renaissance Italy. |

Tarot as we recognize them originated around 18th century, from which point we have written records of tarot used as divination. Before this date the cards seem to have been used for games, such as Tarochii. |
