Fall 2004 Weekly Recaps

Week 1:

Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades

The Road Rebels opened its ninth season sporting some new faces in the lineup.  Management has decided to call up some rookies to the squad in order to breathe some new life into the team.  Best rest assured, fans, this is no rebuilding year, because from the looks of the young talent, The Road Rebels could be headed for its best year ever.

The season kicked-off in the friendly confines of Pound and Pence Bar, but the venerable new site was not easy for the veterans on The Road Rebels.  Richard and Melenee dropped one of their first two S501 games, as did Rick, in his return to action after a long layoff.  But Jim got The Road Rebels back on track, and set the example for Rick and Richard, who both recorded their first wins ever at Pound & Pence, and got The Road Rebels back to a 4-4 tie heading to Cricket.

Once again, the veterans led the way, as Rick/Jim took the broom to Pound & Pence in match 1, and Richard/Melenee added their wins for the sweep.  So after Cricket, The Rebels were gaining momentum with an 8 to 4 lead, with the rookies contributing to 4 of the 8 points. With Melenee & Rick bowing out early, Jim & Richard would need to take all four of the games in D501 in order to take the night.

Richard took his 1 on 2 matches with such zeal, he coasted with another shutout against Pound & Pence. Jim, however ran into a buzz saw in his D501, as his opponents got in right away, and then doubled out to win the game.  But The Rebels were given new life, when the veteran darter ( you know who it is, right?) won game 2, capped off by an amazing out, securing a 11-5 victory for The Rebels.

Props:
Rick & Melenee: Virtual locks for co-REBEL honors.
Richard & The Road Rebels: For the best birthday present evah!

Week 2:

It Takes Two
It takes two to make a thing go right, it takes four people to field a team, and it takes one dart to win it. This week, The Rebels had just what it takes to put together a good night.

Aebra took the field to start things off and made it look easy, taking the first win of the night.  Richard and Rick took all of their games, and The Rebels took a quick 6-2 lead.

But things took a turn for the worse once we hit Cricket.  Richard / Aebra took a beating in match 1, losing two against their best (cocky) player.  Only Rick / Jim were able to take the reins and take down their team, scoring a split.  The Rebels were taken down a notch, and went into D501 up 7-5.

Aebra / Jim made a gallant effort to comeback in their game, against their ace-in-the-hole, but ended up taking one on the chin. Rick / Richard took charge in their D501 match, with Richard notching a righteous "Ton 21" scoring a victory and securing a 10-6 win for the night.

Props:
Rick: For unleashing a torrential storm.
Richard: For coming off the bench to bail us out.
Jim: For raining on our parade.

Week 3:

Deuces Wild

Jim / Richard set the tone for this week's match against the Wasted Mondays by winning both their S501 matches back to back. Rick / Melenee took 1 out of 4 to give The Rebels a 2 point lead 5-3.

Our night just getting started with more deuces as Aebra / Melenee were swept in their Cricket match while Rick / Richard were able to take 1 of 2 in the rubber match, with Richard scorng a R5 to put the game out of reach as the only other pair of deuces were Jon / Jim watching the excitement from the bench. Road Rebels 6 Duoshare Master 6

Not to be undaunted in our pursuit of deuces, Richard / Rick and Aebra / Jim were all able to take 2 of the remaining 4 games of D501 with Rick being the 1 bright spot by scoing a Ton 15 to secure an 8-8 tie to end the night.

Props:
Jim: Off the schnied and back to his old form.
Richard: Displaying the mystical skills from Cobble Hills.

Week 4:

Whoomp! There It Is
Party people let me hear some noise! RG's in the house jump jump and rejoice.  There's a party over here, wave your hands in the air, shake the derriere. These three words mean we're gettin' busy: Whoomp! There It Is!

The night started out fairly ordinary, with The Road Rebels taking the first three games.  Then Melenee hit the board to show the way with a Whoomp!  a 93 out of the box and she rolled from there. Two more wins in S501 gave us a promising 6-4 lead, but Party People, we were just gettin' started.

Upside down and inside out, we were about to show folks what it's all about. Aebra / Richard put together two wins to lead off Cricket.  Rick / Melenee tripped up with two losses, including an outstanding C4 effort from Rick in the last cricket match.  The Road Rebels had jumped to a 8-4 lead.  Let me hear you say: Whoomp There It Is!

Now it's time to get on the mic, and make this party hype.  Different teams, players... better results.  Richard / Melenee scored a Whoomp, and then Aebra / Jim scored a Whoomp.  Another sweep in D501, and a 12-4 win for the night.  Whoomp There It Is.  I'm done.

Props:
Richard: Extra hot, extra spicy.

Week 5:

About Darts
Dear Ndugu,

I believe I mentioned in my last letter that I play on a darts team.  We get together every Monday at a local bar, and play against some other teams from the area.  It's a friendly outing and really a good time.  But recently, I've begun looking at the other teams in the league and wondering "Who are these annoying people in our bar?" Everything they do annoys me.  I hate the way they complain about our scorekeeping, I hate the way they needlessly point when they are already way ahead, I hate the way the sit, I hate the way they smell, I hate the way they root for "Rye bread".

Anyway, Ndugu, this week we played against Go To Hale!, a team behind us in the standings played.  We started out slowly with only two losses, from Richard and Jim, in the first round of S501.  We played much better in the Cricket round, when our team took 3 of 4 games.  One game did take quite a while, however.  It seemed to take forever for either team to hit a bullseye.  I'm sure you've seen some difficult times in your village in Tanzania, but you haven't seen anything as bad as this, Ndugu.  But our team really fell apart in the last round.  In fact, I wish you could have been here to help us.  We were way ahead in the first D501 match, but then we really collapsed in the last two games and end the night with a 10-6 final score.

Well, Ndugu, I've rambled on, and I'm sure you are anxious to go and cash the enclosed check and run to the store for some food.  I have included a little something extra this week, for you to buy yourself some darts and a board.  If you practice, maybe you can come over and join the team someday.

Your friend,

Warren Schmidt

Props:
Richard - 6 wins, 365 AS points.  Squid Attack!
Abdallah Mtulu - For an Oscar winning performance.

Week 6:

They're Coming To Take Me Away
This week The Rebels took a trip uptown to The Nuthouse and was driven completely insane.  Trapped in a 3' X 3' room for 4 hours without any food, The Road Rebels were pushed beyond its psychological limits as it battled to get back on tour.

Things started out really slow for The Rebels, as we took out of eight to start the night.  Rick and Richard recorded the only S501 wins, despite playing one of their worst games of the season.  But once S501 ended, things really started to get crazy.

Newcomer Jon and Rick started out Cricket with two wins, leading them to come slightly unglued.  Jen / Mindy were way ahead in their first game, but lost after The Nuthouse hit a C4.  Refusing to let the tough lost drive them batty, Richard and Jim came back strong and padded their lead in game 2 with a bunch of points before sealing the win.

Jon / Richard started out D501 with a nutty game.  They were ahead but couldn't close the door before the horses left the barn.  In the second game, Rick / Jim were also ahead before things went haywire and they lost.  In the last game, Rick / Jim were neck-in-neck up until the end.  The Nuthouse made a deranged tactical error by leaving themselves with double-1, but they were not able to recover and never got into the nuthouse for the win, driving Rick / Jim stark raving mad in the process. Finally, The Chief ripped the water fountain from the floor and threw it through the window, and The Rebels escaped from the asylum with a 9-7 loss.

Props:
Jim O'Donnell - One for the road 320 ASP.

Week 7:

Turn The Beat Around
Yo, listen up, here's a story.  With the mid-point of the season upon us, The Rebels need to keep movin' to the nitty gritty if we want to continue our winning ways and sail into the playoffs.

Despite early wins by Richard, The Rebels were backed into a corner early with an atypical S501 outing.  Four losses meant we faced an early deficit, and we were forced to turn the beat around.  We had to turn the match upside-down in order to pull out a victory.

Cricket opened with two wins in the opening games, by Richard and Jim.  The Rebels were facing a dire situation when John stepped up to the line in the final match solo.  John as best he could, wasn't able to mount a huge comeback.  Suddenly, The Rebels were tied in the match, 6-6 going into D501.

Riding the cold hands, John / Jim went to the line and notched another 2 losses to start D501.  Then Richard riding solo staged a comeback that fell short and was not able to catch up.  Sadly, four losses meant a 10-6 score, which was a big turnaround from an early tie. If I was any bluer I would die.

Props:
Jon: Overdressed and overpowering.
ODB: Ghetto Supastar, That Is What You Are.

Week 8:

You Get What You Give
The second half started with a rematch of week one, against the last-place team in the league.  Week one was a back-and-forth match that ended with a 11-5 win for The Road Rebels, and this week we again traded blows with the Pound & Pence.

Just like week one, S501 started out with a 4-4 tie.  Richard and Aebra won 3 of 4 S501 games (but got 98 & Ton AS points respectivily), while Jon and Melenee lost 3 of 4 S501 games (but got no AS points between them).

Cricket started out rough, as Richard / Jon dropped both games, including a heartbreaker in game two.  Aebra / Jim earned a sweep in their games, keeping The Rebels tied 8-8.

Proving they could take as good as they get, Richard / Melenee went back out and lost their match of D501 with an almost flawless game.  In the last game, Jim doubled in and out, carrying Aebra to a victory, and the two wins in D501 gave The Rebels a much needed 2 points.

So, with Rick AWOL, we fell from what we gave in week one (a 8-8 loss), but we proved we can go toe-to-toe with anyone.

Props:
Jim: Two big wins and a R6 in AS points.  There's only two rules, and that's all...
Aebra: Major trash talk, backed up by 200 AS points.

Week 9:

A Big Teaser
We came into this week's match on a roll, and with an opportunity to move up in the standings.  We traveled across the universe looking for a win, but we got tripped up at The Ace Bar.  We were so close to a big win, but it was a big teaser, as we only got half the way there.

Richard split to open the night, but Rick won going away in his game.  In Jon's game, it took him so long to double out, but he doubled out, and won.  Although Jim had a good reason for taking the easy way out, he came off his sickbed to post losses between Richard and Rick.  So, after S501, it was tied 4-4.

In Cricket, Jon / Jim and Rick / Richard each got creamed in their second games and came back to win their first game.  With 2 points, we were looking good, and we were almost half the way there to our goal for the night.

We were looking for another D501 sweep like last week.  Richard jumped out to a huge lead, and looked ready to coast to a win, but it was a big teaser, as the other team came back and won.  In game 2, Jon /Jim gave the run around to the guy from Ace Bar, but lost anyway.

We ended with an 10-6 loss.  For the rest of the season, 8 points a week is not enough to make the playoffs.  We need to win some games.

Props:
Rick - 4 wins and 0 AS points.

Week 10:

It's Gonna Be Alright
This week, The Rebels hit some bumpy road, nearly facing a mutiny and a complete revolution.  But when you talk about destruction, you've pretty much covered what happened to us against The Wasted Mondays.

The night started out unlucky, as The Mondays threw a Ton twenty on their opening throw of the first game against Richard, and they proceeded to reel off four straight S501 wins.  Luckily, Jon returned to the fold and posted a win to end the round.  Although we were down 7-1, it seemed like things were getting better, and we felt like maybe it was gonna be alright.

But Cricket began with 1 win and 3 straight losses from Rick / Richard and Jim /Jon.  We were all doin' what we can, but we still ended Cricket down 10-2.

At this point in the evening, we wanted to do nothing more than to change the world with a sweep of D501.  But it was not to be, as we lost the first two games. But we ended on a strong note, as Rick / Jon ended the night with a win.  So, despite the 13-3 loss and general ugliness, we know it's gonna be alright.

Props:
Melenee - Whose 4 beers made it alright.

Week 11:

Papa Got a New Pair of Shoes

Melenee, Aebra and Rick hit Las Vegas on Saturday, and brought back some fortune for lucky week eleven. The cards were stacked in our favor, as we were back in our home arena and Einstein's Relatives didn't bring along a full house. At home, we have batted .500 with our opponents 40-40 (versus 39-41 on the road) and with only 3 people on their team, anyone who bet against the Rebels this week was facing long odds.

In S501, we only played 3 games. Holly drew their ace in the first game and, despite a valiant comeback, lost a tough match. Rick and Melenee cashed in with wins in their matches, and 3 forfeits gave the Rebels a 5-1 lead after S501. Fred / Mindy doubled down to start out Cricket, taking both games of their 2-on-1 match. Holly / Nikki split the aces in their match, and with the final game forfeit, we took another 5 points in Cricket.

By the time we got to D501, we were up 10-2 and playing with the house's money. While it would have been easy to let down, we kept the pressure on, even though two of the games were 2-on-1. Jeremy / Holly started things off with a win. Rich / Nikki fought a war of attrition, before Nikki finally ended it by hitting the point. In the last game, Fred/Mindy faced a strong opponent, but Mindy's Ton-33 and Fred's Ton opened up a big lead. With Fred's double-out, we sealed a sweep in D501 and a final score of 16-2.

It might not have been as fun as a 12-1 payoff on "match the dealer", but it's still money in the bank.

Props:
Mindy - 3 earned wins (no forfeits), 331 AS points. And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson.
