She followed him into the well-furnished living room and surveyed the scene. There were three people aging from mid-twenties to late forties and all seemed nervous.

Who wants to tall me about what happened? Rose asked, after sitting in a nearby chair.

I will, the woman identified as Eunice said, Bert was my husband and we were having dinner tonight.
The four neighbors chatted amiably in the kitchen, pouring themselves wine, helping their hostess with last-minute preparations, then each carrying a serving tray into the dining room. To a casual observer, it would appear like any other small dinner party in the affluent environs of Regal Heights.

"Oh, how lovely," Eunice Seibert said as she placed the bread on the table. "Dottie, you didn't have to go to such trouble."

"Friends are never trouble," Dottie Jones replied. Given the circumstances, everyone was behaving remarkably well.

The circumstances, as they often did in Regal Heights, revolved around real estate. The neighborhood had become increasingly desirable, culminating in a once-in-a-lifetime, windfall opportunity. Jim French, the Internet multimillionaire, was making a ridiculously huge offer to buy the three houses on this shady cul-de-sac. His plan? To tear them all down and build an estate. The well-behaved diners represented the three properties in question.
