Saint Emilion, a terrific place for lunch in the town square. Sit in the shade and sample the local wines which are justly world famous. Of course a really cold beer from Belgium is an equally good idea. The cuisine features pate de fois gras and salads with walnuts. Life is slow and easy here. The sun is hot, the towns are well spaced, the bars are welcoming. Travelers on bikes, particularly self supported, are commonplace and respected. After lunch snack on a macaroon and visit the ancient church. Behind the faade its really a huge cave in the hillside.
