The Perigord is really a wonderful place to go on a self supported bike trip. It has dramatic scenery, gobs and gobs of history, and hearty cuisine. Hundreds of years ago parts of this area belonged to France and parts to Britain. Confusing no? The result is that there are lots of castles. Were not talking beautiful palaces here, like the chateaux in the Loire. Were talking chateaux forts, real castles and fortifications. Many of these are in quite good condition and open for visits. Its possible to walk the walls and marvel at the amount of time, effort and ingenuity it took to erect them. When you stare up at them you can get a glimmer of what must have been going through a foot soldiers mind as he faced the task of assaulting the fortress. Ive pedaled this area many times, both working as a tour guide and just for pleasure with friends or with my brother. Take a little tour of your own by checking out the slide show.
