Grendel Company Charter

Know all who read these words that the following are the guidelines by which the Vikings of Amtgard have set to govern themselves, establish company policies and practices.  This charter is not absolute.  It may be changed or amended through proper procedures of a company Althing as set forth herein.

Definitions Of Terms

Althing:
The term Althing used in this charter is not to be confused with the Amtgard governing term of Althing.  A company Althing is very similar to the more general term.  The term is used because of its Viking origins.

Bondi:
The "middle class" of the historical Viking society.  The Bondi's ranks included farmers, craftsmen, landowners and other freeborn people.  To the Company, a Bondi is someone who has successfully "fought in" to the company and is no longer considered to be a petitioner (praell or thrall).  Bondi are considered initiates and have every potential to become "Jarl" or full members.

Jarl:
The "upper class" of the historical Viking society.  Made up of the nobles and kings of the people.  To the company a Jarl is a full member of the group.

Praell:
See Thrall

Thrall:
The Thrall which means unfree servants, also called Praell, were the slaves of the Viking society.  These were the bottom of the social order and were often made up of persons enslaved as a consequence of warfare or raids.  In the company, a Thrall is a petitioner to the company.

Holmgang:
The method of combat used to settle an argument which a King could not resolve.  Also used personally by any two men feuding and unwilling to have higher authorities settle the dispute.  It is essentially an honor duel.  In the company, a Holmgang serves several purposes.  It is used as an initiation into the company from a Thrall to a Bondi level within the group.  It also can be used to settle matters of any importance.

Gelding:
An insult implying cowardice as well as connotations of sexual perversity connected with a horse.
