Eagles Bomb Panthers 37-0 for Fourth Shutout of 2004!
10/23/2004---Well, when you're "on", you're really "on"! The Eagles clicked in every aspect of this game, while continuing their recent domination on both sides of the ball.
The Panthers won the toss and elected to receive, but the Eagles shut them down on three and out. After taking over on defense, the Eagles scored on their first possession, with Dorrell McClain scoring on a 20-yard run. The first half would continue this way, with the Eagles shutting down the Panthers each time, and scoring on their first 3 possessions of the game. Marquis Baltimore and Rashon Pickett added scores to make the score 19-0 at halftime.
The Eagles received to start the second half, and immediately scored on their first possession, with Maurice Jones bulling it into the end zone. This made the score 25-0, which meant that, by the "slaughter rule", the Eagles had to stay on defense until the score became less than a 20-point deficit, or the game ended.
The Panthers took over on offense, but couldn't muster any scoring drives against a very resistant Eagle defense. The Eagles recovered a fumble late in the third quarter and returned it for a touchdown, making the score 31-0. Late in the fourth quarter, Marquis Baltimore picked up the ball on a Panther missed quick-pass (the ball is live behind the line of scrimmage, regardless if it's caught or not.) and returned it 45 yards for the final points of the game, making it 37-0.
Overall, the Panthers managed only two first downs, and were never really a serious threat in this game. While it was a satisfying win, the Eagles can well remember their rebuilding year last year, when nothing seemed to go right. But, this is one of those games that you chalk up to having some fun, and letting everyone share in getting plays.
My congrats to the entire Eagles team for not letting down in this game. The defense was again lights-out, in gaining their fourth shutout in four victories. We're setting a defensive standard that has not been seen in this league in many, many years!
Up next are the Rams, on Saturday, 30 October 2004. They played the Vikings (the only team that has beaten us, or even scored on us) very tightly, in a 12-6 overtime loss. This should be a great matchup!
Notable Notes: With their 4th victory, the Eagles have now posted 4 shutouts. The offense has scored 95 points this year, while allowing only 18. That averages out to 19 points scored per game! Awesome job, Eagles!
