Eagles Bounce Back & Pound Cougars 20-0!

10/16/2004---What a difference a year makes! During last year's 2003 campaign, the Cougars defeated the Eagles 21-0. This year would be decidedly different, as the Eagles avenged that loss with a 20-0 pounding in return! The victory marked the 3rd shutout in as many victories for the Eagles in 2004, leaving them with a 3-1 record overall.

The Eagles came out on offense tentatively, and had their first drive stall at their own 20-yard line. However, the Cougars could do nothing with the gift of field position, and ended up falling short on the Eagle 5-yard line, while suffering from a holding penalty.

The Eagles were unable to really take advantage of the Cougar defense in the first half, but did manage a 6-0 halftime lead. However, kudos to the defense for absolutely shutting down the Cougar offense. Most of their plays were stopped for a loss, or right at the line of scrimmage. The first half touchdown was scored by Marquis Baltimore, who used his power running style to complete a 32-yard dash into the end zone.

At the start of the second half, the Eagles kicked off to the Cougars, but the opposition went 3 and out, electing to punt on fourth down. The Eagle offense decided it was time to kick it into high gear by grinding out a 40-yard drive, capped by Dorrel McClain's first touchdown of the year! On the ensuing extra point attempt, we went for 2 instead of 1, and scored on Timarcus Simpson's 5-yard dash up the middle, making the score 14-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the motivated Eagle "D" shut down the Cougars yet again on their first possession. The Eagles then marched down the field and scored on a 23-yard touchdown run by Marquis Baltimore, his second of the game. The referees immediately signalled that the score was 20-0, which means the "slaughter rule" is implemented. Basically, the slaughter rule is defined as being when a team goes up by 20 points, they must play on defense until the opposing offense gets it under 20 points, or the game ends. The opposition starts on the 30-yard line, and must get first downs, or a touchdown to keep the drive alive. The Cougars could do neither, as their offense stalled drive after drive, due to the stiff Eagle defense.

Kudos to the entire team for a well-fought effort! EVERYONE did a fantastic job, and the Eagles turned in an extreme team effort. DOMINATION, on both sides of the ball! It's what we've preached all year, and the Eagles stuck to that philosophy during this game!

Up next are the Panthers, on Saturday, 23 October 2004. Let's get our game faces on Eagles, and get ready to de-claw the Panthers!

Notable Notes: With their 3rd victory, the Eagles have now posted 3 shutouts.
