Eagles Absorb First Loss of the Season
October 7, 2006---We knew coming into this game that the Tigers would prove to be a tough opponent for us...and the game turned out to be an absolute defensive struggle, as the Tigers prevailed, 9-0.
The rain and field conditions made it tough for both teams to generate much offense, and there were several 3-4 and outs throughout the entire game. The Eagles and Tigers are both ranked in the top 3 in offense in the league, and neither one was ever able to hit their full stride. However, late in the first quarter, the Tigers handed the Eagles their first-ever deficit in 2006 with a broken play for a touchdown, to take a 7-0 lead. That would be all of the scoring for either team in the first half.
The second half was very similar to the first, as neither team would give an inch. The Eagles caught a break as Sawyer Dixon made an interception as the Tigers were driving, but were unable to do anything with the turnover. Joey Moore also created an opportunity by putting a crunching hit on a Tiger runner, causing a fumble. On the ensuing drive, the Eagles drove all the way down to the Tiger 5-yard line, but came up empty on a fumble, recovered by the Tigers.
The 4th quarter proved just as frustrating for both teams, but the Tigers caught an opportunity with a safety in the Eagle endzone, making the final score 9-0.
It was a very, very tough game, and one that could easily have gone our way with a couple of breaks. However, turnovers are a killer in this league, and it made the difference in this one for both teams. Congrats to the Tigers for gutting this one out! We wish them the best of luck throughout the remainder of the season! Meanwhile, we'll focus on our upcoming game with the Rams, who always play us tough. I feel, without a doubt, the Eagles will be back on track for the Rams game, and will get their momentum back! Go Eagles!
