Eagles Lose Heartbreaker in OT to Rams, 7-6
October 2, 2005---The Eagles knew the Rams were going to be a tough challenge going into this game, as the Rams had scored 31 points in their victory over the Raiders last week. But, the Eagles were ready, and continued to show an amazing defensive turnaround that began in the second half against the Cowboys last weekend. Including the 4 quarters that the Eagles shut out the Rams, along with the 2 quarters against the Cowboys, the Eagles went 6 consecutive quarters without allowing any points. This was a HUGE improvement, and one the kids should be proud of!
Neither team could generate any points in the first half, but the Eagles' offense featured long drives that completely dominated the time of possession, and kept the Rams' offense off the field. What impressed me the most was how the Eagles were finally able to change the snap count anywhere from 1 or 3! This kept the Rams' defense on edge, and resulted in a bunch of offsides against them. Despite the Eagles moving the ball well, both teams went into the half tied at 0-0.
The second half would prove to be just as tough, and the game ended at a 0-0 tie in regulation. The Eagles won the toss in OT, and elected to defer to the Rams for the first possession. After the ball was placed at the 10-yard line, the Rams would unfortunately score on their very first play. The ensuing 1-point conversion was good, and the Eagles were facing a 7-0 deficit. The Eagles would prove to be just as efficient, scoring on their second play on a great run by Diante Lyons. After calling timeout, I elected to go for two points instead of 1 for the win. A tie does teams little good in this league, and it seems to count against you just as much as a loss, when it comes down to the standings. So, I truly believe we made the right call to go for the win. Unfortunately, the gamble would not pay off. Even though it appeard that Timarcus Simpson fought his way over the line by at least a good foot, the officials disagreed, marking the ball at the 2-inch line. Game over.
While many agree that this was a horrible call, there's not much we can do about it. The important thing is the fact that these kids completely jelled as a team today, and their determination to make a run at the conference title only doubled. If we can manage to win out the next 3 games, we'll definitely be up there.
I could not be any prouder of our team! We showed a lot of poise, and I think we're more than ready to chase after the top teams in our division, now! If we can win out, who knows what'll happen! Go Eagles!
