BAKED GOODS
Oh yeah... now the fun begins! We bake because it makes our homes smell wonderful, because it's easier to pound the daylights out of bread dough than a small screaming child, and because it makes our families think we're the cat's meow. We adore baked goods because they satisfy not only our senses of taste and smell, but our sense of touch as well, thanks to their marvelous variety of textures. And, face it, nothing inspires as much as something that evokes a smidge of guilt. I'm here to tell you, though, that you have less to feel guilty about than you might think. Baked goods are good for you. Take the Boston Creme pie, for instance. The cake itself contains flour - chock full of B vitamins - eggs - need we mention the protein? - and milk, full of the calcium that will prevent us from breaking our hips someday in the not too distant future. The pudding contains yet more milk and eggs - reason enough to lick the pan dry after its contents are transferred to the cake. And it's all glazed with chocolate, which stems, believe it or not, from a lowly bean. A vegetable. Enough said.
