| Childhood friends Billie Joe Armstrong (guitar, vocals) and Mike Dirnt (bass) formed their first band, Sweet Children in Rodeo California at the age of 14. Al Sobrante (born John Kiffmeyer) was their first drummer who joined the band in 1989. During that year they released their first record "39/ Smooth" independantly, and soon after that they signed a contract with a local independant label, Lookout! Sobrante quit the band after their first album was released so he could go to college, and Tre' Cool (born Frank Edwin Wright III) was their new permanent drummer. In 1992, they released their second album, "Kerplunk." It led to waves of interests from other record companies, and the band finally decided to sign with Reprise. In the Spring of 1994, "Dookie," the band's major label debut was released. Songs such as "Welcome to Paradise" and "Longview" made "Dookie" a great success. "Basket Case" spent five weeks on the top of the American modern rock charts. In 1994, "Dookie" won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance. Shortly after "Dookie" was released, "Insomniac" followed in the fall of 1995. During that summer, they hit number one with "J.A.R." By the Spring of 1996, they had sold over 2 million copies. None, not even "Brain Stew/Jaded" was as popular as the songs from "Dookie." "Nimrod" was well recieved by most critics and fans. It sold 80,000 copies the first week. The song "Hitchin A Ride" made it to #5 on the modern rock charts. Probably the most well known song by Green Day (the highest it ever made was #2) was Good Riddance (Time of Your Life.) This very popular song was played in any remotely sad situation including the final episode of Seinfeld. This CD probably garnered the band more repect than the last 2 albums, although its only sold just over two million copies, the lowest sale out of their three major label albums. In the fall of the year 2000, "Warning" was released. The song "Minority" was extremely successful. After only four weeks after the release of "Minority" it sat atop the modern rock chart. No other Green Day song hit the top that fast. |
