Myers Out for the Year
Matt Myers won't get that incentive bonus he was promised, with a goal of 30 saves. He will end the 2005 season 8 shy of that mark. The teams oldest player and key to the bullpens success was placed on the DL last week after spraining his back on a pitch to Rusty Greer. In a save situation, Myers walked Kenny Lofton, then was injured as Greer grounded out to third. Billy Koch relieved him, and wound up with the save. Koch will remain as the teams closer. Since the scratch of Myers, Koch has filled the hole with two saves in two chances. Both closers contracts end this year, and negotiations have begun on a possible extension. Myers ended the year 2-4 with a 2.64 ERA, the arguably best year of his 4 year career. |

We're on a Roll
Oakland won every game this week, starting a 6 game winning streak, currently the longest in the HHSL. In September of 2004 Oakland set the record of 7 wins in a row, which could be broken, should the A's win their next two games. Between 2001 and 2002 the A's lost a franchise record 17 straight. |

113 Game Shutout Drought Ends
O-Town hasn't proven to be a team of endurance throughout its years in the HHSL. August 19th was only Oakland's 15th shutout in HHSL history, Pedro Martinez has more than doubled that in his past 5 years. Oakland scored its second shutout of the year, its pitching staff had given up at least one run in all 113 games between April 16th and August 18th of this year. The 2003 Tigers have the HHSL Record for this streak, between 2002 and 2003 they went 149 games without a shutout. The victory went to Brad Pautz. He scattered 8 hits and 7 K's over the 9 innings. In his previous start he set an Oakland record giving up 14 hits to the Angels, the most hits given up by an Oakland pitcher in HHSL history. In the shutout the 27 year old threw 130 pitches, 106 were strikes. He is now 3-1 with a 2.89 ERA in 4 starts. |

Schmidt Wears 4th Uniform of the Season
Jason Schmidt has been traded 8 times in the HHSL, he has played in every division, and is back in California for the 5th time. Now in the grips of General Manager, Poison Maddux, hopefully he can settle in long enough to focus on the game. Oakland signed Schmidt though 2007. He was granted a $5 Million signing bonus and will be paid $4 Million a year. The Marlins, Tigers, and Reds also offered Schmidt contracts, but he chose Oakland, hoping to, "Help turn Oakland into a playoff contender as early as 2006." Since joining Oakland, Schmidt has gone 1-2, posting a 5.82 ERA in 4 starts. |
