1B, Carlos Delgado
Delgado Traded
After two full seasons, 315 games, in Oakland, Carlos Delgado has been traded once again. He is now the starting 1B in St. Louis. Just before Opening Day, Delgado was dealt to the Cards for Samone Peters, Ramon Gomez, Barney Black, and a player to be named. Delgado was one of the biggest names traded before Opening Day. Poison Maddux felt obligated to trade Delgado, saying, "I have too many reasons to send him out. Briggs and Christienson are nearing ML debuts and Will Hall will start at third in 2006. That along with the fact that we are in a rebuilding process leaves us with little choice but to send either Frank Thomas or Carlos Delgado off." So far Delgado is batting .216 in 51 at bats. Frank Thomas was claimed off waivers by Toronto.

Who's to Blame for the 3-13 Start?
Oakland has begun the season with the worst pitching in the majors. Oakland gave up a league leading 58 runs in its first 8 games. So its the pitching? Well, yes and no. Why were so many runs scored? Currently the finger is being pointed at catcher, Herman Long. Long allowed 38 stolen bases in the 8 game stretch, thus advancing runners into scoring position many times. Oakland lost 4 one run games, could these have been victories for the A's had someone with experience been behind the plate? There is no sure answer on that, but Long has been demoted, with Steve Lomasney in his place.
Scott Goodman is the current starting catcher, but he isn't looked very solid either. Goodman is without a hit in his first 18 at bats. His six walks hardly make up for that, but at least he is covering the position defensively allowing only 3 stolen bases and two 2 balls.
General Manager, Poison Maddux, has been unable to find a permanent starting catcher since joining the club. Maddux planned to continue to platoon Goodman and Widger, as he did in 2005, but the unexpected retiring of Widger forced him to regain his search.

Haddie Briggs Makes Anticipated Debut
Haddie Briggs is one of the greatest prospects in the HHSL. Many believe he will be the 2006 AL ROY. Last year he hit 38 homeruns, batting .328 in AAA Modesto. Briggs pleased Maddux in his first week as an Athletic. Briggs was on base in 13 of his 28 plate appearances. He slugged .600, scored 10 times, and slammed his first major league homerun far beyond the leftfield fence. An annoyed fan threw the ball back on the field, allowing Briggs to recover it. Oakland fans hope its the first of many.
Currently Briggs is .308/.382/.551 with 3 homers, 13 runs scored, and 9 RBIs.
