Deb Piscionere. Or simply “Big Deb” as she’s affectionately known around the club. She’s Greenacres model player: the glue girl. The one that if you didn’t have her at the club, might just fall down around you. And you’ll often find Big Deb first to game day to help set up – and the last to leave from the bar later that night.
I know for a fact if it wasn’t for Big Deb’s husband, son and daughters – Greenacres would certainly be in a mad rush most Sundays looking for time keepers, scoreboard operators and just simply - spectators.
On-field - here's what Deb does: she promptly pays her fees, she jogs her laps to the hardest of her ability and she notifies the coach if she can’t make it to training. Game day: She plays a team game, shepherds, blocks, reads play for others and talks. She shares the ball. And she never particularly cares how many goals she scores or how many kicks she gets.
Off-field Big Deb stays largely in the shadows at Greenacres, yet at the same time she always seems to be in and amongst it and is a person who leads by example. True, her stats per game aren’t as impressive on paper, but it’s her continuous team spirit, character and voice on field per game that definitely count for something.
This season saw something special with Big Deb notching up her 50th game in round 2 on the 7th May. In today’s league where it’s hard enough just to pitch a team each week – this achievement is an amazing testament to Big Deb’s determination and love for Greenacres and footy.
Big Deb loves being part of our team. And she loves being a Dragon. She’s been around a few seasons now and has seen the highs and also the lows. She brings to each training session not only her boots, but her wealth of experience and sportsmanship.
Greenacres should be grateful for the services that comes with Big Deb. She’s not only a voice around the club – but truly a model player.
