The Great Lakes Martial Arts League was created to establish an organized and structured tournament league, for the martial arts community within the Great Lakes region, that also fosters the name recognition and skill development of local martial artists.

The matches are real - not scripted "sports entertainment." Though much controversy exists around the sport of MMA, we felt that the conception of the league needed to focus on the more "traditional" aspects of the martial arts. That being said, the Great Lakes Martial Arts League is
not a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) organization.

Athletes
In GLMAL competition, we want the best of the best. It is for this reason that the league is composed of upper-level martial artists, with regards to rank. Our tournament format allows for Brown, Red and Black Belt / Sash level martial artists, of all styles, to compete and earn valuable recognition in their chosen art.

That being said, we do not want to diminish the accomplishments of our martial arts community's under belt population. These men and women are our future elite, and should be noted as such. At each tournament, underbelts will have the opportunity to compete in singles matches, with the winners receiving a medal.

Events
Our affiliated events are hosted, and run, by many respected and talented martial arts instructors and schools. Each affiliated tournament is governed by their own individual rules and regulations, as determined by the tournament host(s).

Our hosted, sponsored events are more comparable to traditional tournaments, with forms and continuous point sparring, but with a more concerted effort on keeping the matches fast- paced and exciting. Imagine a traditional Karate or Tae Kwon Do tournament with the glitz and glamour of sports entertainment. Our format is open to all styles of martial arts. Each martial artist will compete in his/her chosen discipline - under a unified set of rules that apply to all styles, equally.

The biggest problem with traditional tournaments is that rules, often, are skewed towards one particular style. Very rarely, in this age, can you find competition where the rules fit in to each and every style. For example, a Kung Fu practitioner would be at a great disadvantage in a Tae Kwon Do or Judo competition. It is in this arena, with unified rules, that we feel our league is far ahead of the rest.

Charity
As taught by the Buddha, selflessness is a virtue. Being said, much of the profits of the leage, and it's parent organization, are donated each year, to various, local charities.
