When George Lucas released the smash Epic, Star Wars, everyone knew that a sequal would follow after the sucess from Star Wars.
The dark middle chapter of a trilogy was first used here, and has been used many times after. While SW and RotJ had celebrations for the rebels, this time they run for their lives as the Empire throws everything at them, many die, 2 lovers are torn apart when one is frozen in carbonite, and a young jedi faces the lowest point in his life. The Idea of the dark middle film has been used again in trilogy's such as Indiana Jones and X-Men.
In Empire Strikes back, the rebels are hide from the Empire on the Planet Hoth, a frozen wasteland, but the Imperials soon discover them and send a full scale assult to defeat them. Dispite loseing many brave men, the rebels manage to escape into space.
The Empire persues The Falcon, carrying Han Solo, Leia Organa, Chewbacca and C-3PO. The chase goes into an astroid field and soon to CLoud City in Bespin.
Meanwhile elsewhere in the galaxy, Luke Skywalker begins his jedi training with Yoda, But when he senses his friends in danger, he rushes to save them.
Some consider this to be the best SW film, It had a superb plot, as well as bringing in some of the best music of all films (Han/Leia Love theme, Imperial March) and One of the most memorable, powerful and spoofed lines of all time:
"I am your father."
Again, great film, was re-released in 1997 to celebrate the 20th anniversay of the original Star Wars Film. If you like Sci-fi films, look into this film, and the rest of the Star Wars Saga.

Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back's Chances are very high. Like Star Wars it is one of the Favorites to win the competition. It has a rather easy route into the quarter finals where it may face The Matrix or Temple of Doom, but the hard part begins in the Semi finals, where, if It makes it, ESB may face either Return of the Jedi or Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
