Reflections

for vibraphone, piano, violin, and cello

Duration: ca. 6'00"

This early chamber work is the first in my "optics trilogy", a series of three chamber works based on various optical phenomena. After a somewhat ethereal opening, a theme emerges on piano which is soon harmonized by the whole ensemble. The piece builds in rhythmic intensity until a groove pattern is established in 13/8 meter, with strong accents that continue unabated throughout the remainder of the middle section, forming a strong foundation upon which each instrument can have its way with the melody. After a brief and amusing quotation on the vibes, the theme returns, and the opening material is repeated, reflected, as it were, about the middle of the piece.
