Raging Ions

for baritone saxophone, piano, and drums

Duration: ca. 4'30"

I've always felt that the worlds of dodecaphonic music and avant-rock had far too few meeting places. In that spirit, I created this piece which is based on a twelve-tone row and rather strictly adheres to the rules of traditional twelve-tone writing...Only it's rock. It even has a fairly standard AABA format with the A-section based on the straight row and the B-section on its retrograde. The driving bassline (which pumps along for pretty much the whole piece, once it gets started) is one of the row's inversions. A real head-banger of a piece, if I do say so myself.
