The idea for Plug came to me while I was in central Europe and I noticed that the electrical outlets were substantially different from those in America. While this was not my first time in Europe, it was the first time I had ever taken the time to look at so mundane an item as an outlet. Actually, that's just where the title came from; the piece itself is heavily inspired by Persian and Turkish music (which, incidentally, are big influences on the Gypsy music native to the region of Europe I was in). More importantly, though, this piece serves as a testing ground for a type of rhythmic development that tries to mirror the techniques of melodic development by extracting atomic motives and organizing principles and expanding upon them. In this way, the complexity of traditional Western music can be extended into new musical realms.
