The Tripper's Wannigan - Winter & Spring 2003!

The snow of winter is settling in and it is time to dig out our paddling gear and check it over for damage and wear. Winter is a great time to replace excessively worn items of paddling equipment and get a deal as retailers will want to move the last of their 2002 stock. Make arrangements to have you gear repaired and take the time to apply another coat of varnish to your solid cherry paddle! It will be worth it come paddling season!

Now is a great time to pull out those maps and plan your dream canoe trip for 2003! It is a lot easier to make contacts and get timely answers from guides and outfitters during this "quite" time of the year.

Take a look outside where you have your canoe stored, look up. Is it under a roof edge? Countless canoes & kayaks are damaged each year due to heavy ice falling off a roof and crushing a laminate canoe or kayak. Wherever possible, try and store your canoe or kayak under a porch or deck out of direct sunlight, UV kills canoe & kayak material!

Don't forget to dig out those trip records from 2002 and relive your thoughts, activities, spectacular sights and sounds of that special canoe or kayak trip during those cold winter evenings when you are sitting around the fireplace!

Have a wonderful Winter and Spring 2003!

History of the Wannigan

The voyageur carried a wooden box, called a "cassette", that was padlocked and contained the canoe brigades cash and valuables.  The lumberjacks of the 1800s modified this container and called it a wangan, the Algonkian native word for "container of odds and ends", but pronounced it "wa-nee-gan".  Later versions of wannigan were used extensively in canoeing to carry both food and cooking utensils.

So it is here at the Tripper's Wannigan that PMH Outdoors will offer monthly "odd or end" related to canoeing.  This could be a thought about paddling, the outdoors in general or a tip to try on your next canoe trip!

PMH Outdoors Presentations

During the paddling season here in Canada, experienced canoe trippers Pat and Bruce Hawkins will often be at various paddling events giving presentations on various canoeing topics.

Some of the PMH Outdoors staff were found paddling on the May 1999 cover of Canoe & Kayak Magazine!
