Hadrian's Wall

Hadrian's Wall

Hadrian's Wall is a world heritage site and was the Roman Empire's most northerly defence. The central section of the Wall is the best preserved.

Remains of the wall can be seen following the route of the West Road in Newcastle. Notably a temple is located behind the Job Centre. A mile castle is located near the Co-op store in West Denton. Remains of the wall can seen running along side the A69.



Springfield Park

Springfield Park in Forest Hall is located 5 minutes walk from Granville Lodge.

The park hosts Forest Hall Bowling and Tennis clubs.

A Community centre is located next to the car park with the tennis courts next to the centre.

The park boasts well-kept flowerbeds and has plenty of seating along the winding paths.

THE COAST

Beach
Tynemouth
Tynemouth is popular coastal destination with stunning beaches.

The Longsands is wide and sandy, with rolling surf. In recent years it has become a well known surfing beach, and has hosted international surfing competitions

The beaches and sea views have always attracted visitors, including Lewis Carroll, William Bell Scott, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Algernon Swinburne, when visiting Swinburne declaimed his poems to the waves.

Charles Dickens also visited and was knocked flat by a wave and soaked in 1867.

Coast
Tynemouth Priory
Prominent on the headland overlooking the river Tyne are Tynemouth Priory and Castle, dating back to the 11th Century.

Next to the priory is King Edward's Bay, smaller and more secluded than Longsands.

Rising Sun Country Park

Country Park
The Rising Sun Country Park is located behind Asda Supermarket at Benton.

It is a beautiful 400-acre green oasis, boasting an organic farm, nature reserve, woodlands and numerous ponds.

An abundance of wildlife can be seen within the park including roe deer.

The Countryside centre is home of a restaurant and an exhibition room.

Birth Place
George Stephenson was born in 1781 in this white stone miners cottage in Wylam, this is now a museum owned by the Nation Trust. The cottage is furnished to reflect domestic living at that time; it is located next to the picturesque riverside path that follows the old Wylam colliery wagon-way.

Dial Cottage is the former home of the adult George Stephenson; it is located on Great Lime Road a short distance from Granville Lodge. His first locomotive "Blucher" was built at the adjacent colliery wagon shops, and used on the wagonway which crosses the road at the east end of this cottage.

The Billy
The Billy
The loco pictured here is "The Billy" a forerunner of the world- famous Rocket. The Billy is the oldest existing Stephenson loco; it was developed from the Blucher. The Billy is housed at the George Stephenson Museum in North Shields.

The museum boasts that rides on a steam train can be taken from it in the summer months. Also the story of coal and electricity's impact on ordinary people's lives can be discovered here.

The Wagonway today links into a comprehensive network of routes and pathways, ranging from coastal routes, to off-road leisure routes along river corridors and inner urban routes on the re-used mineral lines. These are used be cyclists, walkers and horse riders.
